<h2>1. God’s people are to resist sin</h2>

<h2>2. The Christian life is a constant struggle against sin</h2>
<p><strong>Hebrews 3:13</strong> | <em>But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.</em></p>
<p><strong>Acts 20:28</strong> | <em>Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.</em></p>
<p><strong>Romans 7:14–25</strong> | <em><sup>14</sup> For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. <sup>15</sup> For I do not understand my own actions. <h2>3. God helps his people to resist sin</h2>
<h3>3(a). Release from sin through Jesus Christ’s death</h3>
<p><strong>1 Peter 2:24</strong> | <em>He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.</em></p>
<p><strong>Romans 6:1–7</strong> | <em><sup>1</sup> What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? <sup>2</sup>By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? <sup>3</sup> Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? <sup>4</sup> We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. <sup>5</sup> For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. <sup>6</sup> We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. <sup>7</sup> For one who has died has been set free from sin.</em></p>

<h3>3(b). The avoidance of sin through new life in Jesus Christ</h3>
<p><strong>1 John 3:9</strong> | <em>No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.</em></p>
<p><strong>2 Corinthians 5:17</strong> | <em>Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.</em></p>
<p><strong>1 Peter 1:23</strong> | <em>since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;</em></p>

<h2>4. Believers co-operate with Jesus Christ to avoid sin</h2>
<p><strong>Philippians 2:12–13</strong> | <em><sup>12</sup> Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, <sup>13</sup> for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.</em></p>
<h3>4(a). Believers are to put to death what is sinful in them</h3>
<p><strong>Colossians 3:5</strong> | <em>Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.</em></p>

<h3>4(b). Believers are to exchange sinful for righteous behaviour</h3>

So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. <sup>13</sup> Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. <sup>14</sup> But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.</em></p>

<h3>4(c). Believers are to allow the Spirit to inform and direct their conduct</h3>

<h2>5. Practical steps for overcoming sin and temptation</h2>
<h3>5(a). Meditation on Scripture</h3>
<p><strong>Psalm 119:11</strong> | <em>I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.</em></p>
<p><strong>Psalm 18:22–23</strong> | <em><sup>22</sup> For all his rules were before me, and his statutes I did not put away from me. <sup>23</sup> I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from my guilt.</em></p>

<h2>6. Incentives for avoiding sin</h2>
<h3>6(a). The fear of God</h3>
<p><strong>Proverbs 16:6</strong> | <em>By steadfast love and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the LORD one turns away from evil.</em></p>
<p><strong>Exodus 20:20</strong> | <em>Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.”</em></p>
<p><strong>Proverbs 3:7</strong> | <em>Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.</em></p>

<h3>6(b). The holiness of God</h3>

<p><strong>Galatians 6:7–8</strong> | <em><sup>7</sup> Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. <sup>8</sup> For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.</em></p>

<p><strong>Hebrews 10:26–31</strong> | <em><sup>26</sup> For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, <sup>27</sup> but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. <sup>28</sup> Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. <sup>29</sup> How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? <sup>30</sup> For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” <sup>31</sup> It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.</em></p>
<h3>6(e). The need to be a good witness to unbelievers</h3>
<p><strong>1 Peter 2:15</strong> | <em>For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.</em></p>
<p><strong>1 Peter 3:1–2</strong> | <em><sup>1</sup> Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, <sup>2</sup> when they see your respectful and pure conduct.</em></p>
<p><strong>1 Peter 3:15–16</strong> | <em><sup>15</sup> but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, <sup>16</sup> having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.</em></p>
<h2>7. The role of others in avoiding sin</h2>
<h3>7(a). Bad company is to be avoided</h3>
<p><strong>1 Corinthians 15:33</strong> |<em> Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”</em></p>
<p><strong>Deuteronomy 7:1–4</strong> | <em><sup>1</sup> “When the LORD your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and mightier than you, <sup>2</sup> and when the LORD your God gives them over to you, and you defeat them, then you must devote them to complete destruction. You shall make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them. <sup>3</sup> You shall not intermarry with them, giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters for your sons, <sup>4</sup> for they would turn away your sons from following me, to serve other gods. Then the anger of the LORD would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you quickly.</em></p>
<p><strong>Psalm 1:1 </strong>| <em>Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;</em></p>
<p><strong>Proverbs 1:10</strong> | <em>My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.</em></p>
<p><strong>1 Corinthians 5:1–13</strong> | <em><sup>1</sup> It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife. <sup>2</sup> And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. <sup>8</sup> Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. <sup>9</sup> I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— <sup>10</sup> not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. <sup>11</sup> But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. <sup>12</sup> For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? <sup>13</sup> God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”</em></p>
<h3>7(b). A good example is to be followed</h3>
<p><strong>1 Corinthians 11:1</strong> | <em>Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.</em></p>
<p><strong>Philippians 3:17</strong> | <em>Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.</em></p>
<p><strong>Philippians 4:9</strong> | <em>What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.</em></p>
<p><strong>Hebrews 12:1–3</strong> | <em><sup>1</sup> Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, <sup>2</sup> looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. <sup>3</sup> Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.</em></p>

<h3>7(c). Believers are to support one another</h3>
<p><strong>James 5:19–20</strong> | <em><sup>19</sup> My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, <sup>20</sup> let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.</em></p>
<p><strong>Matthew 18:15–17</strong> | <em><sup>15</sup> “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. <sup>16</sup> But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. <sup>17</sup> If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.</em></p>
