The Relationship between the Ministry of Jesus and the Ministry of John the Baptist as Revealed in the Four Gospels [New Revised Edition]

The Biblical Exposition series on the Four Gospels you are now listening to is divided into four parts, each consisting of several chapters. A separate Sermon section contains a total of fourteen sermons, followed by a Conclusion and three Appendices.

The Ministry of Jesus and John the Baptist — Preparation and Fulfillment: The Gospel of the Water and the Spirit, Believed in the Order the Bible Records It

Why do the four Gospels introduce John the Baptist before speaking of Jesus’ public ministry? Matthew records the baptism by which He fulfilled all righteousness; Mark, the messenger who prepared the way; Luke, the birth into a priestly family; and John, the testimony of the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world. These four books of the Bible—the four Gospels—together shed light on the ministry of Jesus and the ministry of John the Baptist.

This book makes clear that we receive the remission of sins not by human zeal, but by believing in the gospel of the water and the Spirit. Just as sins were passed on to the sacrificial offering through the laying on of hands in the Old Testament, so Jesus took upon Him self the sin of the world through the baptism He received from John the Baptist, was judged and died on the Cross, and rose again to complete our salvation.

We must believe in the ministry of Jesus and the ministry of John the Baptist exactly as the Bible records them, receive the remission of sins, abide in the assurance of this completed salvation, and live as witnesses to it.

● Scripture quotations used in this book are from the ‘New King James Version (NKJV)’, ‘American Standard Version (ASV)’.

● This audiobook is an original human creation based on the sermons of Rev. Paul C. Jong. To provide clear delivery and a comfortable listening experience, AI technology was employed only for the voice generation.

Surprisingly, however, the writers of the four Gospels do not begin at once with the public ministry of Jesus. Matthew shows John the Baptist crying out in the wilderness; Mark connects the beginning of the gospel with the event of God’s messenger preparing the way; Luke records in detail from the promise of John’s birth; and the Gospel of John introduces a man sent from God to bear witness of the Light. The four writers differ in expression and emphasis, but they all set John the Baptist at the entrance to understanding the ministry of Jesus.

The main figure of the Gospels is Jesus Christ. And yet all four Gospels place John the Baptist before the public ministry of Jesus. Matthew, after finishing the account of Jesus’ birth and flight, introduces John crying out for repentance in the wilderness before entering the scene of Jesus’ baptism. Mark is more direct. He declares the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and then immediately speaks of the messenger who would prepare the way and of the voice in the wilderness.

In the days of Herod, the king of Judea, there appear Zacharias, a priest of the division of Abijah, and Elizabeth, of the daughters of Aaron. This couple were righteous and walked according to the commandments, but they had no child and were well advanced in years. It is precisely within that reality that God’s promise begins. Luke sets John’s birth not in mythical space but within a specific age, a specific family, and the service of the temple.

Because the baptism John gave was tied to the repentance of sinners, the coming of the sinless Jesus to be baptized by John raises a puzzling question. John the Baptist himself felt that incongruity and tried to prevent Him, saying that he himself needed to be baptized by Jesus. The interpretation that sees John the Baptist as a failure usually begins from the scene in which, from prison, he sent his disciples to Jesus to ask whether Jesus was the Coming One or whether they should wait for another. Taken only at face value, it can look as if John doubted at the last moment. But a single scene must be read within the whole of a person’s ministry and testimony.

If we do not rightly understand this question, we cannot fully realize the baptism of Jesus, His cross, and the gospel of the water and the Spirit. Many people, even as they profess to believe in Jesus, take the ministry of John the Baptist lightly or misunderstand it. But the Scripture does not testify of John the Baptist merely as one prophet among many. Jesus Himself said that John was “more than a prophet,” and testified, “Among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist” (Matthew 11:9, 11:11).

Since everyone is born a sinner, everyone must believe in the gospel of the water and the Spirit to be washed of those sins. In other words, we must believe in this gospel to be born again, and only when we so believe can we meet the Lord. Whether or not we can receive the remission of sin and be born again depends on whether or not we rightly know and believe in Jesus Christ.

They were rich in the flesh and from the world’s point of view, but when I looked at their souls, they looked like people whose hearts were suffering from poverty and hunger, dying of a severe spiritual famine.

The Book of Malachi records the events that will happen in the last day. Along with the promise of hope that those who have received the remission of sin by fearing God will leap for joy like calves let out of the stall, God said this: “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse” (Malachi 4:5–6).

If chapter 1 shows the lineage of the Messiah and the mystery of His conception, and chapter 2 the events surrounding His birth, chapter 3 contains the scene where the Messiah at last comes out to the Jordan River to begin His public ministry. Chapter 3 is therefore like a bridge connecting His birth and His ministry, and at the very center of that bridge lies the decisive event of the baptism of Jesus.
