A little bit about The unday

The Unday’s members share a strong family-like bond and a rich history of musical conspiracy that dates back over 10 years of various jam-band and bar-rock incarnations. In 2011, the collaborative brain-child known as The Unday was born with a more serious intent to pursue originally inspired compositions that push the boundaries of genre. Their music carves out a unique journey, exploring themes of impermanence, gleaned not only by the name, “The Unday,” but by the surprising twists and turns within and between songs. This rock quartet exhibits overtones of classic rock, blues, and jazz, as well as deeply rooted classical and Spanish influences.

We’re coming at you this week with another live, in-studio performance from Beyond Words. They will be joined by Matt Milner live in Studio 2A for an hour of music and conversation.

A little bit about Beyond Words

Pete Fine has played lead guitar in bands in Tucson for decades, including Whole Lotta Zep. He also has composed, orchestrated and performed concertos for electric guitar and orchestra. Joined by virtuoso keyboardist Andrew Hannon and the powerhouse rhythm section of Cat Ripley and Martin Tiernan, Beyond Words ignites the stage with music that is totally original, powerful, and moving. You haven’t heard anything like it.

Pete Fine, born in New York City in 1950, started studying guitar in 1963, and moved to Tucson in 1974. Having performed with ensembles of many different styles of rock and jazz-rock, as well as doing recording sessions and orchestra pit work, he has earned the reputation of being a virtuoso acoustic and electric guitarist. Adding to his resume, he is a self-taught composer and orchestrator. His first work for 12-string guitar and chamber orchestra, written in 1972, was released many years later under the German label Shadocks Records , and a subsequent work for electric guitar with full orchestra was spotlighted in Guitar Player magazine in August 1982.

Having loved symphonic music all his life, Pete has had several works performed in Tucson, most notably a Symphony for String Orchestra, an Electric Guitar Concerto (released on CD by the Catalina Chamber Orchestra conducted by Enrique Lasansky) and a suite for 12-string guitar, two vocal soloists, and orchestra. In addition to these musical accomplishments, Pete has studied classical Indian music and is a performer on sitar, a popular North Indian stringed instrument.

A little bit about panic baby

The emotive Phoenix indie soul-rock ensemble led by vocalist Raquel Willand, Panic Baby (for fans of Rilo Kiley, Alabama Shakes) skillfully mixes elements of indie rock & soul with a western desert flare. In 2015 Willand, guitarist Jared Wood and bassist Nick Smith met online. The trio explored musical influences and writing styles while cutting their teeth in the local music scene. In 2017 with the addition of drummer Devin Russell, Panic Baby was born. Panic Baby has learned the meaning of patience.

After releasing a handful of singles in late 2017, which helped earn Willand the award of Best Vocalist from the Phoenix New Times the following year, the band turned their focus to writing their album and fine tuning their sound. Following a failed go at working with a producer for “Don’t”, the band made the choice to go full DIY on their debut, fully embracing the challenges and hard work to come. In this time Panic Baby honed their delicate yet purposeful songwriting and their captivating live show.

A little bit about Night Weather

Night Weather (formerly Infinite Souls) is an Indie-Pop Duo from Tucson, AZ. In their first year as a band (2017-2018), they were featured on Downtown Tucson’s Second Saturday main stage, The Great Cover Up, and were added into the rotation on both of downtown Tucson’s local indie radio stations. They spent the rest of their time touring and playing shows, shooting music videos, and creating live loop songs using whatever inanimate objects they found. With a new name, multiple singles in the works and many exciting developments brewing behind the scenes, Night Weather is a band to keep on your radar. Their story:

Mike & Britt met at an indie musician showcase in Colorado, competing against each other. They ended up falling in love and settling down in Mike’s home town of Tucson, AZ. After writing and performing separately for years with multiple different bands, they struggled to find the musical voices they truly envisioned. Instead of continuing on separate musical paths, they decided to drop everything and form a band in 2017 to pursue their creative dreams together.

A little bit about GABRIEL SULLIVAN

Here is an excerpt from an excellent biography written by Bob Hanshaw. You can read the article in its entirety here.

Gabriel Sullivan’s music covers a huge swath of genres. Punk and hardcore experience in adolescence led to a gig playing bass with The American Black Lung. Coming back from 4 years of hard touring with that group, he started Fell City Shouts with Brittany Katter and some of the Black Lung guys, telling them “Just play quieter!” He met Andrew Collberg (a pop singer-songwriter) through that project, who then hooked Sullivan up with Nick Luca (jazz and everything else) and Craig Schumacher (the head of Wavelab Studios). And after playing the first post-All Souls Procession “Flor de Muertos” concert, he was more or less inducted into the Latin scene here – with Brian Lopez, Sergio Mendoza, The Jons, “all the Nogales guys.” He discovered cumbia and co-founded Chicha Dust with Lopez. Chris Black (Chamberlab) introduced him to “Romanian gypsy music and Balkan brass,” which led to the formation of his flagship ensemble, Taraf de Tucson. And now he’s finally working on a solo album with a softer, singer-songwriter approach, pulling in Latin and rock and atmospheric influence, backed by the Danish musicians who comprise the instrumental core of Giant Sand these days – which Sullivan has also played in.

A little bit about Stripes

Stripes is Tucson’s favorite not-yet-old-enough-to-drink positive pop punk quartet!

Formed in early 2018, they already have a full length album to their credit, entitled 520. The range of the album is diverse, including catchy punk tunes to deeply felt ballads. Stripes is led by former Frecks vocalist/guitarist Izzy Krunkel. The other members of the band include Bella on drums, Rafe Centuori on bass, and Aiden on guitar.

A little bit about Mamma Coal

Carra “Mamma Coal” Stasney was born and raised near Detroit MI and recently transplanted to Tucson after living in Portland OR for twelve years. Carra is a singer-songwriter steeped in the traditional sounds of country and roots music. She has been playing and writing for over twenty years. Whether leading a six-piece band, or playing a solo set, she brings her full soul and spirit to each song.

Carra cut her country music teeth by playing in several classic country cover bands, singing songs by her heroes like Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Loretta Lynn. She also had the opportunity to regularly sing June Carter’s parts with a Johnny Cash tribute band. A committed songwriter, she’s released four albums of original music, two as band leader with American Cosmos and Copper & Coal, and two solo efforts. Her last album Raven Haired Vixen was inspired by Willie Nelson’s album Red Headed Stranger.

A little bit about Nocturnal theory

Tucson-based singer-songwriter and producer, Dominic Rischard, combines soulful lyricism with mellow sample-based electronics under the band name, Nocturnal Theory.

His musical origins began at an early age with the electric guitar. Spending years writing and recording guitar melodies in a variety of studio settings allowed him to gather a detailed and eclectic sound. He created a style that melded the organic elements of acoustic instrumentation and modern music production. Dominic’s songwriting reflects moments of weakness and vulnerability. Colored with influences of pop, folk, R&B, and rock, Nocturnal Theory steps outside the rigid classifications of these genres.

While releasing his first single “Set Our Bodies on Fire” in late September of 2018, Rischard worked to develop a strong live set to reflect his studio project. Collaborating with close friend and bassist Danny Fimbers, vocalist/guitarist Clay Dudash, and guitarist/keyboardist Dominic Zuna, the four-piece band paired their influences to create the sound recognizable on Nocturnal Theory’s sophomore release, “Never Go”. Incorporating vintage synthesizers, down tempo beats, melodic guitars and emotional lyrics gives the group their distinguished style. Rischard explains,” Writing these songs is a process of growth and healing. When I am writing with honesty, I can feel it.”

A little bit about purple spectre

Take the compositional sophistication of Wayne Shorter, fuse it with the hard grooves of Bitches Brew and Red Clay, sprinkle in some dust from the shoes of Ariel Pink, and you might get something resembling Mike Moynihan’s Purple Spectre. Like a chemist mixing volatile compounds, Purple Spectre blends elements of funk, rock, soul, and hard bop into a potent serum of musical nirvana.

The ultimate impact of Purple Spectre is a funky tapestry that is rooted in tradition, yet innovative and fresh. Wry musical wit is integral to Moynihan’s exotic compositions and to the searing improvisations that all the members provide. Purple Spectre is jazz as jazz was meant to be: steeped in awe of past masters, yet peering fearlessly into the future with steely resolve.

A little bit about Yum!

Started in 2016, YUM is a funk/punk trio from Tucson, Arizona. With Maya Rizk on Drums, Ari Dettman on Guitars/Vocals, and Rylande Dodge on Bass/Vocals; and with funk as a foundation, the band uses its groove to venture out into various genres including metal and punk to name a few. From house shows to the stages of Club Congress and Solar Culture, YUM is always down for the opportunity to play and share their take on the funky beat.

A little bit about DILUVIO AZ:

​Diluvio AZ is a female fronted, 5-piece unit. Their Mexican-American cultural influences have also informed their musical leanings. Early on, Diluvio AZ focused on honing a Spanish speaking pop-punk sound.  Their first studio EP entitled, “Libro de Canciones” was recorded in Los Angeles and Tucson and released in September 2016. They didn’t look back after that.

Diluvio AZ is truly international band. They enjoy touring throughout Arizona, Nevada, Texas, California, and Mexico. Some of their favorite artists to have played live with include, Julieta Venegas, Natalia LaFourcade, Reik, Inspector, and Jarabe de Palo.

A little bit about ADAM TOWNSEND:

Adam Townsend is an old soul; his musical inspiration is borne out of a love for the blues, folk, Motown, and soul. Although Adam is from Tucson, he spent six years honing his craft of songwriting, performing, and producing music in San Diego. Now that he is finally back in Tucson, you can find him playing at many popular locations in and around Southern Arizona, Southern California, and possibly even at your best friends wedding!

With his debut album set to release in June, 2019, Adam is realizing the culmination of his ten year journey of songwriting and sharing stories about his life and passions with eager audiences. His passion for music led him to Nashville, Tennessee where he spent a month recording at the legendary Bomb Shelter Studio. It was in this hallowed hall that Adam finally achieved his lifelong dream of producing a full-length studio album.

A little bit about little cloud:

Joshua Butcher and Jonica Butcher of the group, Little Cloud have been singing and playing music together since Jonica was an infant, so it only made sense that the father-daughter duo would someday start a proper musical project. The surprise was that the rest of the band would end up feeling so much like a family too.

That band is Tucson’s Little Cloud, consisting of Geremy Cady on bass, Jonica Butcher on vocals, accordion and ukulele, Joshua Butcher on guitar, ukulele and vocals, Joe Fanning on lead guitar, Anita Hershey on trumpet and John McIntyre on drums. Hershey and McIntyre are also members of Joshua Butcher’s New Orleans-flavored ensemble the Muffalettas.

A little bit about Bryan Thomas Parker:

Bryan Thomas Parker and friends blend indie rock, soul, alternative, and more into a perfect dust devil of earnest and prolific songwriting. Since first releasing DIY records as a solo artist, Bryan Thomas Parker and his constantly revolving live group have been performing over 80 gigs a year while releasing a constant flow of live and studio recordings. New album, “And Friends”, out May 17, 2019.

Parker states:

 

I’m a singer-songwriter. I make my living playing folk music in restaurants and get my jollies rocking out in bars, but at the core I just see it as an art form and medium. I try to switch up the musical color on my pallet as often as possible. If I must pick an aesthetic, I’d like to be known as the musical offspring of Willie Nelson and Lou Reed.

 

I started writing songs when I was about 11 years old. I didn’t have any real instruments, but I had one of those little made in the ’90s toy Casio keyboards. I am not even sure I had any clue what the notes were. Just natural harmonics and a kid exploring his creative side.  I grew up on country oldies and then discovered punk rock and played in a thousand crappy bands.

 

In my mid-20s, a buddy gave me Woody Guthrie’s Dust Bowl record and I realized that songs are much more effective when they tell a story. Plus, the politics were raw and aggressive just like punk. That drew me in. Didn’t take me long to figure out it paid OK, too. My step-dad had so many cool records growing up. That got me writing. But I did hand bells, choir, dancing, acting, and live ensemble singing as a kid. It was just meant to be.

Rising Sun Daughter is a solo-collaborative project from Grace Rolland, cellist and vocalist of the nationally acclaimed band, Run Boy Run. As an exploration of the landscape that holds the electric and the acoustic, the story and the song, the real and the reflection, Rising Sun Daughter does something unique: create an experience. Singing songs from the heart, Rising Sun Daughter brings audiences together in a moment and a feeling, incorporating storytelling, lyricism, emotional honesty, and beautiful musicality.

We’re coming at you this week with another live, in-studio performance from Feverfew! They are joining us in Studio 2A for an hour of music and conversation. The show is hosted this week by Sophie Gibson-Rush.

A little bit about feverfew:

Feverfew began as a way for Sissy Flowers to prepare herself for the upcoming 2017-2018 winter. Chicago has those winter steel-grey skies that go on for weeks which causes even the heartiest among us unable to focus or care about the good things in life. This was especially true in Sissy’s case. The inspiration for Feverfew came during that winter when she ended an important relationship and needed to build a strong foundation to keep the demons of her mind at bay.

Sissy originally was a bass player; everything that she wrote was on the bass. However, she felt that this was not the instrument to start her new project. She picked up a guitar that had been gathering dust in her room for the past six years and began to write. Luckily for Tucson, she didn’t make it through the winter! She packed all of her worldly possessions in her car and drove back full-speed to Tucson, where she was determined to continue her work on Feverfew as a fully-functioning band.

As Feverfew began to develop, it had an edge to it. There were simply too many minor chords accompanied by intense and emotional vocals. Enter Molly. Molly Ragan, who plays the, bass added fuzzed-out, evocative, and thoughtful bass lines. Her playing brought a sense of excitement to the group that made it feel as though a simple, three-piece group could exude just as much enthusiasm as a band twice its size. Add Bill Baron’s unhinged drumming to the mix and the result is a sound that reminds you to take life a little less seriously, relax, and have a little fun!

Feverfew jokes that they are Tucson’s leading DESSERT-ROCK band. However, they base that on appearances alone. Sometimes rainbow pastel and glitter don’t taste as good as they look. Fortunately, they sound better than they taste.
