The First Kings Biblical Exposition series you are now listening to consists of twenty-two chapters and is divided into four volumes. This fourth volume covers First Kings chapters eighteen through twenty-two. The content is organized by topic and divided into two sections: Biblical Exposition and Sermon.

The fire on Mount Carmel and the still small voice, Naboth’s vineyard and Micaiah’s cry—what do they say to us today?

1 Kings chapters 18–22 show a faith that believes and follows the LORD alone as the true God and keeps the entrusted gospel to the very end.

God restored the weary Elijah, and He also enabled Israel’s small army to defeat the great Syrian forces. Elijah’s prophetic ministry was later carried forward by John the Baptist in the New Testament. By the baptism He received from John the Baptist, Jesus took the sins of the world upon Himself, died on the Cross, and by rising again completed salvation through the gospel of the water and the Spirit.

Do not be afraid because your number is small. Do not make the church of God and the gospel your own personal possession, but like the prophet Micaiah, who preached the word of God even before four hundred prophets, boldly preach this gospel of life, the gospel of the water and the Spirit.

● Scripture quotations used in this book are from the ‘New King James Version (NKJV)’, ‘American Standard Version (ASV)’.

● This audiobook is an original human creation based on the sermons of Rev. Paul C. Jong. To provide clear delivery and a comfortable listening experience, AI technology was employed only for the voice generation.

These words begin with the event at Mount Carmel in which the hearts of the people of Israel, who had been faltering between God and Baal, turned back to God; they go on to record the course by which Elijah, losing heart before Jezebel’s threat, was raised up again by God’s still, small Word; the disobedience of Ahab, who followed his own will even after receiving victory from God twice; and the greed that seized Naboth’s vineyard, and the death of Ahab, who rejected the Word Micaiah delivered. In all these events is contained the important truth that only the gospel of the water and the Spirit is the true Word of salvation that brings sinners to life, and that we must not use the gospel and the souls God has entrusted to us for our own private desires.

1 Kings chapter 18 is the chapter in which God sets Elijah before Ahab again and turns Israel back to the true God. The long famine was the result of the sin of Ahab and Israel, who had forsaken the commandments of the LORD and followed Baal. Baal was believed to give rain and abundance, but God, by shutting up the rain, revealed that this idol was an empty thing without any power. And now He said, “I will send rain on the earth” (1 Kings 18:1), opening the time of restoration.

Because of this affair, Queen Jezebel was killed in the end, and dogs tore at her corpse and dogs licked her blood. Northern Israel was the nation Jeroboam had founded. Jeroboam was a man who stood against God. God entrusted the nation to him for a while, but he did not turn back and kept leading that nation in order to protect his own authority. After Jeroboam died his son became king, and after several kings Ahab became king. Ahab seems to have been a man who looked very weak-willed.

I know this retreat must have been hard for you. If you were so tired that you rested without knowing how the time passed, that too is good. The title I intend to preach on today is ‘A Leader Fallen into Greed and the One behind Him.’ In truth, I was very cautious about preaching this sermon. But this is not a word aimed at any one individual; since the Bible speaks like this, it is that we should receive the lesson together. It by no means signifies that the sisters are like this or that the brothers are not. I only want to make this part clear in the light of the Scriptures.

Those who do not farm may not know it well, but to one who farms this is a serious matter. The vineyard was close to the royal palace, and he meant to buy it in and turn it into a field. He meant to plant things like lettuce and spinach.

For three years there was no war between Syria and Israel, but outward peace did not make Ahab’s faith right. He still followed the way of Jeroboam, and did not fully turn from the sin of the golden calves and Baal. A time of peace is not a time to set up one’s own will, but an opportunity to return to God.

Israel was originally one, but after Solomon it was divided into southern Judah and northern Israel. It is what happened when Jehoshaphat, king of southern Judah, joined hands with King Ahab of northern Israel and tried to recover a land called Ramoth Gilead, which had been taken by the hand of the king of Syria. Israel is by origin a nation that has the servants of God, a nation the LORD God Himself ruled, a nation He governed through the servants He raised up. So even after men became kings, whether in northern Israel or in southern Judah, there were always the servants of God whom God had raised up.
