The Gospel of Luke Biblical Exposition series you are now listening to consists of twenty-four chapters and is divided into six volumes. This third volume covers chapters eleven through fourteen. The content is organized by topic and divided into three sections: Biblical Exposition, Question-and-Answer, and Sermon.

Luke Seen from the Perspective of the Gospel of the Water and the Spirit (Ⅲ) is a book that examines what the saved should seek and where they should set their hearts as they live.

The author, Pastor Paul C. Jong, has preached the Word from the perspective of the gospel of the water and the Spirit, which Jesus Christ completed through the baptism He received from John the Baptist, the Cross, and His resurrection.

Through Biblical Exposition, questions and answers, and sermons, this book conveys prayer for the Kingdom of God and the preaching of the gospel, the faith that seeks the Kingdom of God first, a life of waiting for the Lord who will come again, the narrow gate and the feast of the Kingdom of Heaven, and the way of the true disciple. It helps readers live lives of faith, hoping for the Kingdom of God and preaching, together with the church, the gospel of the water and the Spirit, the gospel of the remission of sins.

● Scripture quotations used in this book are from the ‘New King James Version (NKJV)’, ‘American Standard Version (ASV)’.

● This audiobook is an original human creation based on the sermons of Rev. Paul C. Jong. To provide clear delivery and a comfortable listening experience, AI technology was employed only for the voice generation.

It is to know through the word what God accomplished in history in order to save sinners, and to believe in the heart the gospel of the water and the Spirit, which Jesus Christ completed with the baptism He received from John the Baptist, the Cross, and the resurrection. Volume 3 of the Gospel of Luke shows what the person who has believed in this salvation must ask for, and where he must set his heart as he lives. The person who has received the remission of sins does not rely on the wealth of the world or on his own righteousness, but hopes for the kingdom of God and serves the gospel together with the church.

We human beings, too, when we receive a request, often let it pass as long as we can, or just answer that we understand and leave it at that. But if the other person asks strongly and asks again, we cannot help settling it quickly, if only because we are bothered. Today’s text is saying exactly that. When our saints pray before God, there are times when, though a certain thing absolutely must be accomplished, they try a few times and then give up when there is no answer. To such people as us the Lord said, “though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs” (Luke 11:8). He is saying that if we ask strongly, the Lord cannot help answering.

The Lord spoke the word that He gives the Holy Spirit to the one who prays to God. When we look at the word, from verse 5 to verse 7 He explains with an example why we must pray. It is the natural word that if a certain man, for some reason, has a guest come to his house and has nothing to set before him, and tells his friend to lend him three loaves, would not anyone get up and give? In verse 8 He said, “I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs” Though he would not get up and give because he is his friend, since the man asks strongly and keeps coming and asking him to lend it, he cannot help getting up and giving, if only because he is bothered. And then the Lord said to us, “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened” (Luke 11:9–10).

I would like to share the word on the basis of the word we read today.

The scene of salvation did not begin from the effort of the suffering person but from the compassion and authority of the Lord, who recognized her.

In the synagogue on the Sabbath there were people who had gathered to hear the word. Luke recorded that among them there was one woman, “There was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up” (Luke 13:11). Because of a body that had stiffened over many long years, that woman could not straighten her body and stand by herself. Luke does not record that the woman first approached Jesus and asked for help. Jesus saw her, called her, and said that she was loosed from her infirmity. The scene of salvation did not begin from the effort of the suffering person but from the compassion and authority of the Lord, who recognized her.

This word does not mean that when we go to a worldly feast we should physically sit in a lower seat. What the Lord taught us through this word is that when we are invited before the word of the Lord, that is, when we believe in God, we must not raise our hearts. It is to hear the word with the attitude of not raising our hearts but knowing our own appearance and learning. It is to accept it as the word God has spoken, believe it, and acknowledge it, and so be saved. And it is a word to be exalted at the time when God exalts us.

The word we read today is a word the Lord spoke to all of us.

The subject of the word we will share today is becoming a disciple of Jesus. It is a matter of how one becomes a disciple, and looking at the text, becoming a disciple of Jesus is not an easy thing. Being saved by faith is easy, but becoming a disciple seems tremendously hard. “Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them” (Luke 14:25). The Lord taught many things through some occasion or event. Jesus was going along the way with a multitude. At that time He looked at that multitude and spoke. “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26–27).

And with that He says, “So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:33). The Lord is speaking about becoming a disciple of the Lord. When a person tries to do something by his own strength, he keeps getting caught in snares and it is hard. In fact, emptying oneself is more important than a person having some will. It means that rather than saying that one can do something, it is right to empty oneself and live the life of faith relying on God.
