About Gabriela Olmos >

Gabriela Olmos has written 12 children’s books in Mexico, one in Canada, and one in the United States. Her books have inspired exhibits, plays, and television spots promoting literacy. Gabriela has written fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Her articles, short stories, and poems have appeared in periodicals in Mexico, France, and the United States. She has translated literary and academic texts, and compiled anthologies of poetry.

In 2009 Gabriela was featured among six Mexican writers profiled in the French magazine La Revue des Livres pour Enfants. Eight of her books have been chosen for public education programs in Mexico. Two of them were selected for the A Leer / IBBY Mexico Guide. In 2013, the Smithsonian Asia Pacific American Center recommended Gabriela’s book I Dreamt. In 2016 The Latino Author chose it to head its list of the top ten books of the year. In 2019 Gabriela received the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz / Alaska Award, in the context of the festival Woman Scream: International Women’s Poetry Movement, chapter Anchorage. Also, Venezuelan organization Banco del Libro included Gabriela’s book Palabras como hilos in its exhibit featuring the best Spanish books for the year and organization Empowering Latino Futures (Latino Literacy Now) granted Eyes Closed an International Latino Book Award.

Author José Chavez first book, Little Stars and Cactus, Estrellitas y Nopales, won three awards from the International Latino Book Awards. He’s inspired by childhood experiences and the work of many outstanding poets. José, who has an ESL Masters, was born in New Mexico and raised in Venice, CA; he now resides in Moreno Valley, CA, with his wife and tabby cat. Mi color favorito es el amarillo porque es el color del sol, mi número el ocho porque parece un gato sentado en espera de que le dibujen las orejas y la cola. Me encanta el chocolate y la pizza casi tanto como adoro escribir libros para los niños y niñas.

Me fascina leer y siempre tengo un libro de cabecera. El día lunes me trae suerte, seguramente porque abrí los ojos por primera vez al comenzar una semana de mayo, bajo el brillante amanecer del cielo azude Quito, Ecuador.

He recibido muchos premios fuera y dentro de mi país, pero el más grande de todos es tener la oportunidad de conversar con mis lectores. He publicado cincuenta y ocho libros y a todos los quiero por igual porque son mis hijos de papel.

Edna Iturralde is the best-selling writer of children's books in Ecuador while her books are also sold in the United States, México, Central and South American countries. She has published 63 books with a wide range of themes that interest and educate children in factual and emotional understanding of environmental and social issues drawn mostly from current and past Latin American cultures. Her literature also includes global social issues. Her book, Green was My Forest, was chosen to be part of the ten best Latin American Books published in the 20th century, awarded by SM Foundation and the Chilean Libraries. Ms. Santamaria has a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education along with eight years of teaching experience. As a result of her education and professional experiences, the author has created the DLee’s World Series to incorporate preschool common core objectives, diversity, playful verbiage, and developmentally appropriate learning strategies to help increase reading comprehension and overall learning. As a child who struggled with reading and social identification, the DLee’s World Series is designed to promote literacy, diversity, and fun!  To take it a step further, the author also developed her series to be bilingual with both the English and Spanish translations of the story on the same page. When asked, the author said, “My hopes are for my books to be tools for children and families to either learn a new language or for English Language Learners (ELL) to strengthen their knowledge of the English language with their educators at school and families at home.” Overall, as a woman of Hispanic descent, the author understands the importance of learning the Spanish language, and regrets that she was not taught as a child. Therefore, she has created the bilingual series as a way for children to learn a language that is becoming so widely used throughout the United States as well as many other countries.

On September 8, 2016, the author attended the International Latino Book Awards, winning in two categories for “DLee’s First Day of School” and “Un Mal Dia of DLee!” In June of 2017, Diana Santamaria has once again won an International Latino Book Awards for her bilingual book, “DLee’s Snow Day.” Furthermore, the story also won a Moonbeam Award in September 2017.
