Jesus received baptism from John at the Jordan River. Just as sins were passed on to the sacrificial offering by the laying on of hands in the sacrifice of atonement of the Old Testament, Jesus had all the sins of the world passed on to Him once and for all through the baptism He received from John, the representative of mankind. Those sins also include the sins of a whole lifetime that each one of us commits from birth until death. The sinless Son of God did not receive baptism in order to wash away His own sins; He received it in order to bear all our sins on His own body. Because there was this baptism, the meaning of the Cross also becomes clear. Because of those sins that had been passed on to Him, the Lord shed His blood and died on the Cross, thereby receiving in our place the judgment that we had to receive, and He rose again from death and delivered us from sin and death. If we believe only in the blood of the Cross and do not know the baptism, we cannot know how our sins were passed on to Jesus, and so sin remains in our hearts just as it is. That is why we believe in this gospel of the water and the Spirit, which He accomplished through the baptism, the Cross, and the resurrection, and become righteous not by our own deeds but by the grace of the Lord, who has remitted all our sins.

Ch01_01_Sermon_Where does a person who has realized his sins receive the remission of sins？ (Mark 1:1–8)

The Gospel of Mark opens the door of the gospel, saying, “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (Mark 1:1). After declaring the beginning of the gospel, Mark introduces the ministry of John the Baptist before describing Jesus’ public ministry. The other Gospels also record the ministry of John the Baptist in different ways. This is because John the Baptist was the servant sent by God to prepare the way for Jesus and testify of Him. This is because John the Baptist is the servant who passed the sin of the whole world on to Jesus. It is the news that it was not we who found a way to solve our sins by ourselves, but God who sent His Son and saved us. Therefore, when we hear the gospel, what we must look at first is not how strong our resolve is, but whom God sent and what He accomplished through Him.

Ch01_03_Sermon_Live a life like that of John the Baptist (Mark 1:1–11)

When we look at this word, John the Baptist appears. It says, “John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins” (Mark 1:4). John the Baptist appears here, and it says that John the Baptist pointed out people’s sins, led them in this way to repent, and so had them receive baptism, thereby guiding people to Jesus Christ; that he testified of Jesus Christ; and that, as for his own life, he lived in the wilderness, wore clothing of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and ate locusts and wild honey. He lived such a life and testified of Jesus in that way.

Looking at this word, it said, “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (Mark 1:1). At the beginning of the gospel, at the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the one who appears first is John the Baptist. John the Baptist, who gave baptism to Jesus, appears, and this John is such a one as was prophesied in the Book of Isaiah in the Old Testament. Looking at the word here, it speaks in this way, as it is written: “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You. The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight’” (Mark 1:2–3). What is written here is “I send My messenger before Your face” (Mark 1:2); that is, in sending His Son to this earth, God the Father said, “Ahead of that, I will send My messenger; I will first send Your servant, I will send the servant of Jesus Christ,” and He said, “Who will prepare Your way before You” (Mark 1:2). It said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight’” (Mark 1:3).

Ch01_05_Sermon_John the Baptist， the forerunner of the gospel (Mark 1:1–2)

First, John the Baptist is the messenger whom God sent in order to entrust him with the duties of the high priest. The New Testament says, “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You” (Mark 1:2). Dear fellow believers, the Bible must be read very carefully. It must be read carefully. Why did God send His messenger John the Baptist before each one of us, before you and me (Matthew 11:10–11)? Why did that John the Baptist come six months before Jesus Christ came to this earth? It was to play the role of a servant, and the other thing is that he came to carry out the duties of the high priest. He came in order to fulfill the duties of Aaron the high priest, in order to pass all the sin of the world on to Jesus. Six months before Jesus was conceived by the virgin Mary, John the Baptist was conceived by Elizabeth, a descendant of the family of Aaron, the high priest of the Old Testament. The division of Aaron the high priest refers to the order of the priests who offered sacrifices. In the Old Testament, the sons of Aaron the high priest could all work as priests according to the division of Aaron. Aaron carried out the office of high priest for the nation of Israel. And God gave his sons and his descendants the privilege of being able to carry out the office of high priest. Let us look at the word of 1 Chronicles. “Now these are the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. And Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children; therefore Eleazar and Ithamar ministered as priests. Then David with Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, divided them according to the schedule of their service. There were more leaders found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar, and thus they were divided. Among the sons of Eleazar were sixteen heads of their fathers’ houses, and eight heads of their fathers’ houses among the sons of Ithamar. Thus they were divided by lot, one group as another, for there were officials of the sanctuary and officials of the house of God, from the sons of Eleazar and from the sons of Ithamar. And the scribe, Shemaiah the son of Nethanel, one of the Levites, wrote them down before the king, the leaders, Zadok the priest, Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the priests and Levites, one father’s house taken for Eleazar and one for Ithamar. Now the first lot fell to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah, the third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim, the fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin, the seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah, the ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah, the eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim, the thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab, the fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer, the seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Happizzez, the nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezekel, the twenty-first to Jachin, the twenty-second to Gamul, the twenty-third to Delaiah, the twenty-fourth to Maaziah. This was the schedule of their service for coming into the house of the LORD according to their ordinance by the hand of Aaron their father, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded him” (1 Chronicles 24:1–19). He had the sons of Aaron perform the priestly office in place of their father. Let us look at the word of Leviticus. “‘This shall be a statute forever for you: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether a native of your own country or a stranger who dwells among you. For on that day the priest shall make atonement for you, to cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before the LORD. It is a sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall afflict your souls. It is a statute forever. And the priest, who is anointed and consecrated to minister as priest in his father’s place, shall make atonement, and put on the linen clothes, the holy garments; then he shall make atonement for the Holy Sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tabernacle of meeting and for the altar, and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly. This shall be an everlasting statute for you, to make atonement for the children of Israel, for all their sins, once a year.’ And he did as the LORD commanded Moses” (Leviticus 16:29–34). We must know that God entrusted the office of high priest to the descendants of Aaron forever, according to the division of Aaron the high priest. That the descendants of Aaron carry out the office of high priest was a law established by God that never changes forever. For the atonement of the people of Israel, God had the sacrifice of atonement offered every year on the tenth day of the seventh month, and He had Aaron the high priest offer it.

John the Baptist was not an ordinary man; he was the representative of mankind. And he was the servant of God who passes all the sins of mankind on to Jesus. At the time when John the Baptist was born on this earth, this world was full of sin and idolatry. When all iniquity abounded on this earth, all people were waiting for the Savior who would save them from sin.

We must know the will of God not by the shape of the circumstances we are in but by the word, and that word shows who Jesus is and what He was doing even in the wilderness.

An unclean spirit cried out before Jesus, and when Jesus commanded it, it came out of the man.

We, too, when we see the difficulties of those who live alongside us, can go beyond merely worrying and tell the Lord, who will help, about them.

I would like to share the word with you from this passage in which the paralytic was healed of his illness. Dear fellow believers, would it be easy to heal a paralytic of his illness? If a paralytic were lying on a bed before you and you were told to cure that paralysis, would it be easy? And if famous doctors were told to cure this man who had long since been struck with paralysis, would that be easy? Even doctors cannot cure paralysis well. Because it is an illness in which the nerves become paralyzed, even doctors cannot cure it well. Paralysis is an illness in which something goes wrong in one side of the brain: when something goes wrong in the right side of the brain, paralysis comes to the left side, and when something goes wrong in the left side of the brain, paralysis comes to the right side. Doctors cannot cure such an illness well. There was even a case where a theologian wrote in an ordinary newspaper that there is salvation in all religions as well.

It was not that Levi came forward after quitting his work as a tax collector and becoming a fine person; rather, the Lord came to him right there where he was sitting at the tax office and opened the way for him to follow. In those days a tax collector was a person pointed at with scorn, because he collected taxes from his own people, handed them over to Rome, and filled his own pockets as well. People think that He would call upright people, but the Lord, completely contrary to that thinking, called a man with many faults.

But the Lord is not a savior we have fashioned to fit our own thoughts. He is God, who made us and came to resolve our sins. The angel conveyed this about Him: “For He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). And some people think that their own conduct not being upright is sin. In some countries, when one’s parents pass away, people think that filial piety is to lay them well in a grave in the ground, then raise a burial mound, cover it with turf, and, for as long as the children live, tend the turf of that grave well several times a year throughout their whole lives. But it is said that certain tribes in Papua New Guinea or in the Brazil region thought that, when their parents died, the way to practice filial piety toward those parents was for all the children to gather around and sit down and eat the whole of their parents’ bodies, so that no beast or worm could gnaw even a bit of their parents’ flesh. So this concept of filial piety, too, varies.

The great multitude that had been with Jesus had nothing to eat. Jesus called His disciples and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat” (Mark 8:2). Among them were also some who had come from afar, so if they were sent home hungry, they were in a condition to faint on the way. The Lord did not look only at the appearance of the people gathered before His eyes, but also considered the hardship they would go through on the way back home.

And they will need it in the days to come, too. Our Lord became the food of everlasting life for those who need bread and water. Even now, our Lord is the food of everlasting life for us. We give thanks before the Lord.

The passage clearly states that they were testing Jesus. They did not come with a heart to learn who Jesus was; rather, demanding that He produce the evidence they required, they tried to stand in the position of judging Jesus.

Even though Jesus was with them, the lack before their eyes felt greater than that fact.

It seems that Jesus, too, when He was on this earth, was aware that many people were making various assessments of Him. When Jesus asked, “Who do men say that I am?” (Mark 8:27), the disciples said, “John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets” (Mark 8:28). When Jesus asked again, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:29), then Peter stepped forward and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). The word Christ means that He is the King of kings, our Savior, and also our God, and yet, in relation to God the Father, the Son of Almighty God.

When we look at this word, Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do men say that I am?” (Mark 8:27). The disciples answered Him, “John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets” (Mark 8:28). And Jesus asked His disciples, “But who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:29). Peter was the very first to answer. “You are the Christ” (Mark 8:29). So Jesus said nothing more and warned them “that they should tell no one about Him” (Mark 8:30). This confession that the Lord is the Christ is truly the right confession, and many things are contained in this short confession.
