The Gospel of John Biblical Exposition series you are now listening to consists of 21 chapters and is divided into 4 volumes. This 1 volume covers chapters 1 through 5. The content is organized by topic and divided into three sections: Biblical Exposition, Question-and-Answer, and Sermon.

John seen from the perspective of the gospel of the water and the Spirit (I) is a book that examines, through the entire Gospel of John, how the Word, who is God, came to this earth clothed in flesh and saved sinners from sin.
The author, pastor Paul C. Jong, has long preached, through the word of the Bible, “the gospel of the water and the Spirit” that Jesus Christ completed with the baptism He received from John the Baptist, the Cross, and the resurrection. This book does not explain the signs and words of the Gospel of John as mere knowledge of the Bible or records of miracles, but guides readers to the faith by which they are saved from sin and obtain everlasting life by believing that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.
May everyone who opens this book meet Jesus Christ, of whom the Bible testifies, and obtain true life.

● Scripture quotations used in this book are from the ‘New King James Version (NKJV)’, ‘American Standard Version (ASV)’.

● This audiobook is an original human creation based on the sermons of Rev. Paul C. Jong. To provide clear delivery and a comfortable listening experience, AI technology was employed only for the voice generation.

If Genesis 1:1–5 shows the event in which God created the heavens and the earth by His word, the Gospel of John reveals that this Word of creation is none other than Jesus Christ.

We know well the word we have read. There was a man who came to bear witness of the Light, and that man is John the Baptist. Since it says that this man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe, it means that the first evangelist of the gospel is John the Baptist. It is because John the Baptist baptized Jesus and passed the sin of the world on to Jesus. He transferred the sin of the world to Jesus, and Jesus received the judgment for that sin on the Cross and rose from the dead and became our Savior. The one who took part in this ministry, that is, the ministry of Jesus, was John the Baptist, and it was God’s way that all people would come to believe in Jesus through John the Baptist testifying of Jesus.

The Apostle John, a disciple of Jesus, begins the word again in John 1:14. In chapter 1 verses 1 to 13, he testified that the Word was God, that the One who created the heavens and the earth is that Word, and that He is none other than Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Jesus Christ was with the Father and was also with the Holy Spirit. People did not recognize Him, but He was testified of through a man named John, whom God sent. It says, “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:11–12). Becoming a child of God, becoming a worker of God, and becoming a person who enters the kingdom of heaven do not come about by blood or family line, but only through God. Only those whom God has newly begotten become the people of God. After delivering this word, the Apostle John sums it up once more in verses 14 to 18.

John the Baptist heard the voice of the Holy Spirit saying, “When you baptize, if you see the Spirit come upon someone, know that He is the Messiah who is to come.” And when he baptized, he saw the Spirit come upon the head of Jesus, and he knew that this One is none other than the Messiah. John the Baptist baptized Jesus and passed the sins of mankind on to Him, and the next day, seeing Jesus coming toward him, he testified, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). It was the testimony that that One is none other than the Savior and the Messiah of Israel, the Son of God, and the Messiah who took charge of our sins with the baptism He received from John and would go to the Cross and receive the judgment for our sins. And again the next day, while he was with his disciples, he saw Jesus walking and testified, “Behold the Lamb of God!” (John 1:36), testifying as many as two times.

First, at the wedding feast at Cana, when the wine ran out, Mary said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” When the servants filled the stone waterpots with water according to the word of Jesus and took it to the master of the feast, the water turned into good wine. This was the first sign that Jesus performed, and it revealed His glory, and the disciples came to believe in Jesus. This event shows that the joy and ability that come from human beings can run out, but that Jesus gives new life and true joy to those who believe His word and obey it.

The Lord works when we believe the word of the Lord, and when we believe the word He speaks through the servants of God. No matter how much you read the Bible by yourself, saying that you will live the life of faith alone, it is of no use. God works through the Church. And He absolutely does not work apart from the word of God. That is why there is a time for the sermon and a time for worship, and this is why you and I must worship several times even in one week. If we do not hear the word of God, if we do not unite with the work God wants to do through the Church of God and the servants of God, and if we do not believe with the heart, we cannot do the work of God. When we believe the word of God and believe the word that the servants of God preach, God works in the hearts of you and me and accomplishes His will.

When we believe the word of God and believe the word that the servants of God preach, God works in the hearts of you and me and accomplishes His will.

I am continuing from the message of this afternoon. When is the time that the Lord works in you and me? The Lord works when we believe the word of the Lord, and when we believe the word He speaks through the servants of God. No matter how much you read the Bible by yourself, saying that you will live the life of faith alone, it is of no use. God works through the Church. And He absolutely does not work apart from the word of God. That is why there is a time for the sermon and a time for worship, and this is why you and I must worship several times even in one week. If we do not hear the word of God, if we do not unite with the work God wants to do through the Church of God and the servants of God, and if we do not believe with the heart, we cannot do the work of God. These days there would be no such thing, but in the old days, when people brewed liquor at home and served guests, it was something that could happen. Apart from this event, in our lives, though we prepare and strive to live well, something turns out to be lacking. Things happen such as running short of money or losing our health, and in the end our happiness is broken. There should be joy, as at a wedding feast, and we should live in joy all our lives, but failing to do so is the state of our lives.

Therefore, one must believe in the gospel of the water and the Spirit that Jesus accomplished, receive the remission of sin, and be born again with new life.

Therefore, a person is not saved by religious position, knowledge of the Scriptures, or the efforts of the flesh, but must be born anew.
There is an expression, “Truly dumbfounding,” and though there have been many people until now, this affair was truly astonishing. God said that He does not look at a person’s outward appearance but examines the center of the heart, and it was exactly like that. Along the way there were many strange things, too, but I covered them over again and again, thinking that it was probably human weakness or just personality. But I saw some people who were working in the church treating the working children harshly. Even when stacking a single item, the young workers trembled, saying that it had to be done exactly as they were told. I found that strange. The children who did not tremble even when I spoke trembled like aspen leaves when those people spoke. I did not teach that way, and Jesus did not teach us that way either. As far as possible, we must give freedom and give authority. Whether the items are stacked vertically or horizontally, if there is a better way, one can simply do it that way. So I rebuked them. I said, why do you treat the children harshly, are you a god, shouldn’t you give the children a certain amount of freedom? I had told them to guide the children in skills, not to dominate even a person’s own authority.

It is good to see you. You have been working hard, and since it is the change of seasons, you must take care of your health. When the seasons change, many illnesses arise in the body and diseases go around. Our bodies need a lot of strength to adapt, so we must prepare well and keep our bodies warm. In our hearts, too, we must gain strength by thinking that the Lord will bless us and by looking forward to the warm season that is coming. It seems the winter has now completely passed. After the cold snap comes once or twice, the spring rain will come, the forsythia and the azaleas will bloom, and in a little while it will be the summer retreat. Before then, I know that we must diligently do the work of serving as the flower-calyx by faith. We are also preparing the church site. First we will contract for the land and pick it out, and when the money comes in later, we plan to build the building. Looking at the mission news, even in one week e-books and paper books have kept going out in the languages of many countries, and countless visitors have received books from the website. Also, many people overseas have sent in their testimonies. The overseas mission is proceeding without rest.

Christmas is not far off. In John chapter 3, which we read today, a man named Nicodemus appears. This man was a ruler of the Jews and a religious leader who was called a teacher in the nation of Israel. This man came to Jesus and had a conversation, and when we see him giving answers beside the point to the words of Jesus, it is truly frustrating. Yet Nicodemus was fundamentally not a man who opposed Jesus, but a man who respected, loved, and tried to follow Jesus. So it is all the more frustrating. He came to Jesus and praised Him, saying that no one could do these signs that He did unless God was with him. Because he had heard many rumors about Jesus, it was a remark he made thinking, in his own way, that he was exalting Jesus. But Jesus said to him, “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Then he asked in return. How can a person be born again when he is old? Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time and come out?

When people first met, in our country there was the lean season before the barley harvest and rice was scarce, so when they met, they greeted one another by asking whether one had eaten breakfast. Also, because people often died, they greeted one another by asking whether one had been well through the night. Perhaps because it has become a habit, I, too, always greet people by asking whether they have eaten well. Dear fellow believers, have you received the remission of sin? How good it would be if you had all received the remission of sin! Hoping that you all receive it, we have looked together at the word we know well, from John 3:16 on. God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, the only begotten Son, and made it so that whoever believes in that only begotten Son should not perish but have everlasting life. Dear fellow believers, receiving the remission of sin is very easy. All you have to do is believe in Jesus.

First, Jesus showed the aspect of a true man. The text records, “Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well.” He grew tired as He walked along the way and was thirsty, so He asked the Samaritan woman for water. But He who asked for water was, on the contrary, the One who gives the living water with which one never thirsts again. That is, though He put on flesh and came close to man, He was the Lord of life who gives life to man’s soul.

It was said that we “must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24), and “spirit and truth” means to worship before God with a true heart together with the Holy Spirit. Worship in spirit and truth begins from receiving the remission of sin by believing that the Lord took charge of all the sins we human beings commit with the flesh by being baptized by John at the Jordan River, and by believing that He was nailed to the Cross and received all the judgment for us. In return, we receive the Holy Spirit as a gift, and the worship offered in the state of having true faith and the Holy Spirit in the heart is precisely worship in spirit and truth. The word “spirit” means the Holy Spirit, and the word “truth” refers to the true faith that believes, “Jesus is my Savior; Jesus has perfectly removed all the sins I commit.” The worship offered with that faith is worship in spirit and truth.

God speaks. God clearly says that if we want to receive the remission of sin while living the life of faith, we must not do it by the law; by the law we cannot obtain salvation. Looking at today’s passage, Jesus, on His way from Judea to Galilee, needed to go through Samaria, and so He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar. That place was near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph, and Jacob’s well was also there. Jesus, wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well, and it was about the sixth hour. While passing through Samaria, Jesus plopped down at the small well of a town called Sychar. Having walked a long way, He must have been very tired in body.

The Samaritan woman who lived in the town called Sychar in Samaria had had as many as five husbands. So this woman, ashamed to go about in broad daylight when there were many people around, came to draw water at Jacob’s well, carrying a waterpot on her head, at about noon under the blazing sun, the hour when everyone had gone to take a nap. That day, too, the woman came to draw water at about noon, and someone was sitting by the well. It was Jesus. As this woman came and was drawing water with a bucket, Jesus asked her, “Give Me a drink.” When the Samaritan woman looked at this man, His appearance was that of a Jew. The Jewish garment was a blanket-like cloth wrapped around the body and draped over the shoulders, and Jesus was wearing such Jewish clothing. So the woman asked Jesus, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” The woman said this because, although the Samaritans and the Jews were the same people of Israel, they held a sense of discrimination toward each other. It was because the Jews regarded the Samaritans, a people of mixed blood, as very lowly, and ignored and despised them. That is why this woman asked Jesus in puzzlement.

Today we have read John chapter 5. From John 5:1 on, the man who had been sick for thirty-eight years appears here as the main figure. Our Lord went to this sick man, and seeing him lying there and knowing that he had already been in that condition a long time, He said, “Do you want to be made well?” and the sick man answered, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” When Jesus said, “Rise, take up your bed and walk,” the man was immediately made well, took up his bed, and walked. The Scriptures record the event in which the man who had been sick for thirty-eight years was healed by the grace of Jesus Christ and took up his bed and walked. Our Lord had pity on this sick man, who had struggled and struggled with his sickness for as long as thirty-eight years and yet had not been healed and lay collapsed, and He came to him and saved him.

Just as air is truly precious, yet because it is so common people do not well know how precious air is, so this gospel is truly precious, yet people do not really feel how precious the gospel is. It is because it is so precious. But just as a person dies if he does not breathe the air, so if people do not believe in this gospel, they perish. That is why the righteous of this earth must preach the gospel. There are also some who have come new today; I welcome you. It is being fulfilled according to the promise of that word which says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household” (Acts 16:31).

In verse 39 it says, “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.” Are you those who, thinking that you have eternal life in the word of the Scriptures, look at the Scriptures, and have been saved by believing in Jesus Christ, who is revealed in the Scriptures? The Bible says so. When I look back on whether I, too, did so, I was able to meet Jesus while reading the Bible, and at first I knew only the Cross of Jesus, but later I came to know the gospel of the truth of the baptism of Jesus and the Cross and was saved. If we think about the historical background in which He spoke this word in John 5:39, the Jews believe only the Old Testament. This word is a word that includes even the New Testament, but at this time it was a word spoken about the Old Testament.
