The Gospel of Matthew Sermon series you are now listening to covers all twenty-eight chapters of the Gospel of Matthew across four volumes. This first volume covers chapters one through six. The content consists of sermons by Pastor Paul C. Jong.

The very first thing Jesus did as He began His public ministry was to receive baptism from John at the Jordan River.

Through that baptism He had all the sins of the world passed on to Him once and for all, and after He was judged through the blood of the Cross, He rose again and fulfilled all righteousness. This book proclaims, in order, the baptism of Jesus, by which He fulfilled all righteousness; the promised salvation and the assurance of the remission of sins; Jesus, who called His disciples and gave the Sermon on the Mount; and a life lived by believing in the righteousness of God. Through the sermons of Pastor Paul C. Jong, which expound the genealogy and the birth, the worship of the wise men from the East, the temptation in the wilderness, the calling of the disciples, the Beatitudes, and the Lord’s Prayer, it proclaims the gospel of the water and the Spirit, which is the basis of the remission of sins, and the way of living by believing in that righteousness and praying to the Father.

● Scripture quotations used in this book are from the ‘New King James Version (NKJV)’, ‘American Standard Version (ASV)’.

● This audiobook is an original human creation based on the sermons of Rev. Paul C. Jong. To provide clear delivery and a comfortable listening experience, AI technology was employed only for the voice generation.

In particular, in chapter 3, verses 13 through 17, there is recorded the word that reveals when and how Jesus had the sin of the world transferred to Him, and why He had to receive baptism from John. When we read the word of Matthew chapters 1 through 6 contained in this book, we must first engrave in our hearts this work that Jesus accomplished at the Jordan River. For only when we know the work of the baptism through which our sins were passed on to Jesus can we clearly believe in His salvation.

When we look at the word of Matthew 1:18–25, Christmas comes to mind. Usually, when preaching on the birth of Jesus at Christmas, one begins with this word and then preaches Matthew chapter 2, Luke chapters 1 and 2, and John chapter 1 in order. But even when it is not Christmas, I want to share grace together with you about Jesus the Savior through this word. I hope that we will think of Jesus a little more in our hearts, receive Him with hearts at ease, obtain comfort through the Lord, have faith, and be blessed in both spirit and body.

I think this age is especially an age in which the authority of the saints is being greatly broken. When we look at the world, we keenly feel that it is an age of darkness, and this present age seems to be a gloomy age with no hope for the future, whether spiritually or physically. But God has said that He will compensate the born-again saints for all the suffering they have undergone for the Lord’s sake while living on this earth. Because we have something to be compensated for, no matter how gloomy this world may be, we have hope both spiritually and physically.

Without the Bible, it is not so easy to find the ruins that existed in ancient times. Why do I say this? If we look at verse 22 of today’s word, a man called “Archelaus” appears. Archelaus became the one who ruled Judea after Herod. That time was precisely when Jesus was born. Later, historians set the year A.D. 1 based on the time when Jesus was born. This is to tell you that the birth of Jesus, salvation, and the work of God are truly the highest peak of all human history.

Yet there are people who wrongly understand that He did not bear it, and this is regrettable. It is recorded so clearly, both in the original language and in our language, and so I cannot tell you how frustrating it is that people understand the Bible so wrongly. The word clearly records that Jesus came to this earth, received baptism from John, had all our sins transferred to Him, died on the Cross, and rose again. So today I want us to think together about one or two things.

When we look at this word we have read here, how can anyone say that Jesus did not bear sin when He received baptism from John? Yet there are people who wrongly understand that He did not bear it, and this is regrettable. It is recorded so clearly, both in the original language and in our language, and so I cannot tell you how frustrating it is that people understand the Bible so wrongly. The word clearly records that Jesus came to this earth, received baptism from John, had all our sins transferred to Him, died on the Cross, and rose again. So today I want us to think together about one or two things.

There was a big truck that had been following behind our car, and the driver must have dozed off, for the steering wheel had turned to the left, and the truck had crossed the center line and gone up onto the roadside on the opposite side. If he had not seen that we were stopped at the signal and had driven straight on while dozing and hit us, we would have lost our lives on the spot. I thought that if God had not protected us, something terrible would have happened. It was not only I who felt that way; everyone riding in the car with us felt it. The thought came to me that God had protected us so that we would do a little more work.

A little while ago, as I was going home after finishing the evening service, a car behind us honked its horn very loudly, and I was startled and looked back.

Because within one another there is faith in the gospel of the water and the Spirit and the Holy Spirit is present, our hearts are in accord even when we show our shortcomings to one another without reserve, and even though each of us makes a different sound, we achieve harmony within the Church of God. We must work in unity, each in our own place, and enjoy rest and peace of heart. If we give ourselves wholeheartedly to the Lord’s work, God works in all things, and so our labor is not in vain. I believe that God, who preaches the gospel to the whole world, will cause us to do even more work in the future and will give us even greater peace.

He said, “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light” (Matthew 6:22). This word tells us how important our heart is in our spreading the gospel. If our heart is truly bright, we can preach the gospel to all the people around us. Mission work, that is, the spread of the gospel, is in fact not done with material things but by faith; it is done with the word of the truth, and with the faith of our hearts that believe the gospel. However much we may go abroad, fully equip ourselves with the language of that country, abundantly prepare material things, and prepare everything, even the customs of that country, the point is that if the preacher’s heart is not bright but dark, the gospel is not spread. As the word says, the gospel is spread when the preacher’s heart is bright, that is, when the preacher has no sin and the light of that gospel, the light of the truth, the light of the remission of sins shines into people’s hearts. How can we spread the gospel to people? If our eye is good, we can spread the gospel.
