Dr. Tekmyster is double board-certified in physical medicine, rehabilitation, and sports medicine. As a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, his focus remains on decreasing pain and working with his patients to allow them to resume their activities. Dr. Tekmyster is a physician consultant for the Los Angeles Kings professional hockey team and USC Trojans Athletic Medicine and team physician for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard teams. His specialties include advanced interventional spine care, regenerative treatments, and sports medicine. He is at the forefront of spine research, interested in regenerative therapeutics to treat chronic lower back pain. In the time he has been a part of Keck Medicine of USC, he has brought in new technologies to treat chronic lower back pain and spinal stenosis. He discusses his professional and recreational life, explains common spinal issues, and describes new and ongoing treatments/procedures related to the same.

This episode's guest speaker is the Clinical Director of the Fatty Liver Disease Program and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine- Dr. Albert Do. Dr. Do completed his undergraduate studies with Bachelor’s Degrees in Molecular and Cell Biology and Psychology at the University of California at Berkeley, and a medical doctorate and Master’s in Public Health Epidemiology at Boston University. He completed his residency and fellowship training at Yale University. He has expertise and interest in gastroenterology, hepatology, obesity medicine, and metabolic health. He is particularly interested in all forms of fatty liver disease, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and associated obesity, as well as alcohol-associated fatty liver disease, which are significant public health problems. Being board-certified in obesity and lifestyle medicine further informs his interest and skills in metabolic health.

Welcome back to the DocTalk everyone! I am thrilled to interview the guest speaker for today’s episode- Dr. Sandip Biswal. Dr. Biswal is a board-certified musculoskeletal radiologist affiliated with Stanford Medicine. He received his MD from Harvard and MIT medical school. He pursued his internship at Columbia followed by his residency at Stanford and finally his fellowship at UC San Diego. His focus on diagnostic radiology coaxed him to develop clinical imaging methods that would objectively pinpoint the site of pain generation using novel agents that specifically seek out molecular and cellular pain markers to highlight hypersensitive pain-sensing nerves. His clinical work is nothing short of groundbreaking as it seeks to reduce unnecessary surgeries, improve outcomes, aid in the development of novel analgesics, and potentially reduce healthcare costs associated with the management of chronic pain.

It gives me great pleasure to announce the guest speaker for this event which will have us feeling anything but numb. Dr. Philip Carullo is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is an attending anesthesiologist in the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, and he provides anesthesia for pediatric patients undergoing a wide range of surgical procedures. He is also a member of the pediatric regional anesthesia team. He received his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, he completed his residency in anesthesia at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and fellowship in pediatric anesthesia at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He is board-certified in both anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology. Dr. Carullo’s research interests include technology and curriculum development, as well as understanding health-care disparities in patients with developmental disabilities. He is also interested in fellow education and serves as the Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship at John’s Hopkins.

Episode 9: Interviewing a Trauma Surgeon (Harvard Medical School graduate!)

It’s been a minute since my last episode but I am super excited to interview the guest speaker for today’s episode- Dr. Damon Clark a reputed Trauma & General Surgeon at Keck Medicine of USC. Dr. Clark obtained his medical degree in 2004 from Harvard Medical School, one of the top medical schools in the country. He trained for his general surgery residency at both Eastern Virginia Medical School and Henry Ford Hospital and completed his residency in 2010. He recently completed a 2-year fellowship in Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center, one of the most renowned trauma and surgical critical care training centers in the world. In his young academic career, Dr. Clark has completed five research fellowships in the areas of surgical and molecular chemistry and pharmaceuticals. He recently received from the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Oriens Award. In addition, he was awarded the 2011 Best Preceptor for Center for the Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills (CSTARS) from the University of Maryland Medical Center. During his general surgery training, he was awarded the 2010 Medical Student Teacher of the Year. In this episode, he tackles issues from invasive procedures like exploratory laparotomies and thoracotomies as well as venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis to diagnosing patients, and common misconceptions revolving around ER doctors and their job.

Dr. Steven Giannotta, Professor and Chairman of Neurological Surgery, joined the Department of Neurosurgery at USC in 1980 and became the Chairman in 2004. He is also the Program Director of the Neurosurgery Residency Training Program. He earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan, where he also did his neurosurgical residency. He has special interests and expertise in two broad areas of neurological surgery. Dr. Giannotta has gained recognition for his work in cerebrovascular disease of the brain and spinal cord. He has surgically treated over 2000 intracranial aneurysms. Dr. Giannotta also has an interest and special expertise in surgical approaches to the cranial base. He has also surgically removed more than 800 acoustic neuromas. His current laboratory work, in conjunction with Florence Hofman, PhD, involves the study of basic cellular and epigenetic mechanisms of human cerebral arteriovenous malformations.
