The Psalms Biblical Exposition series you are now listening to consists of twelve chapters in total. This first volume covers Psalms 1 through 12. The content is organized by topic and divided into two sections: Biblical Exposition and Sermon.

For long ages the Psalms have been the prayer book and the hymnal of the saints.
Yet if we read them only as beautiful religious poetry or as an expression of emotion, we easily miss the meaning of these songs of praise. For David’s laments and praises ultimately point to Jesus Christ, the Savior who is to come.

This book is a Bible study that unfolds the Psalms from the perspective of the gospel of the water and the Spirit. David’s songs are not an outpouring of emotion but the confession of a righteous man who has received the remission of sins, a prophetic praise that looked up to the Christ who is to come. The blessing, righteousness, and peace of the Psalms do not come from human goodness but from the salvation God accomplished in Christ.

Beneath it all flows a single gospel. It is the gospel of the water and the Spirit, by which Jesus took our sins upon Himself through the baptism He received from John, paid the price of those sins on the cross, and rose from the dead to make us righteous. When you open the Psalms with this gospel, the old songs come alive as your own confession, and this book leads you to the blessed place of those clothed in the righteousness of God.

● Scripture quotations used in this book are from the ‘New King James Version (NKJV)’, ‘American Standard Version (ASV)’.

● This audiobook is an original human creation based on the sermons of Rev. Paul C. Jong. To provide clear delivery and a comfortable listening experience, AI technology was employed only for the voice generation.

You may have been living a life of faith for a long time, or you may be standing at the very beginning of your walk of coming to know God. Today may be a day when your heart is full of joy, or you may have opened this book with a heavy burden and a weighed-down heart. Whatever place you may be in, the Psalms have been the very praises that such people sang before God. Therefore, this book is not a book for special people, but a book for everyone who desires to come before God with their heart just as it is.

But this passage does not stop at being the personal prayer of David alone. It shows how a righteous person who has received the remission of sins should rely on God and live in this world. It also tells how the one who believes in the righteousness God has given comes to true peace even amid the worthless words of the world and the condemnation of Satan. As David begins this psalm, he calls God like this: “O God of my righteousness!” These words are very important. David did not say, “O God, answer me because I am righteous.” David was a man who knew the weakness of his own flesh better than anyone. He knew what kind of grace he had received before God. Therefore, he did not come to God holding on to his own righteousness; he came holding on to the righteousness that God had given him.

David suffered because of the words of Cush, a Benjamite. We cannot know in detail exactly what those words were, but from the content of the psalm we can see that they were slander that deeply wounded David’s heart and his conduct. Rather than explaining himself to people, he came first to God. For he believed that God does not look only at a person’s outward appearance but tests the heart.

Psalm 8 is a passage that praises how great and vast God is. David looked at the heavens. He saw the heavens, the moon, and the stars that God made with His fingers. And before that vast created world, he realized his own smallness. He confessed before God, “What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?” (Psalm 8:4). These words are not merely about how honorable a being man is. The center of these words is not man but God. It lies in the fact that this great and vast God was mindful of man—weak as dust and bound to perish because of sin. The true grace of these words lies in the fact that God remembered man and visited him, and finally sent Jesus Christ and saved us through His baptism, the cross, and the resurrection.

Psalm 8 is a passage that praises the great glory of God. David looked at the heavens, the moon, and the stars and saw the vastness of the created world God had made. And before that vast world, he thought of the smallness of man. Man is a truly weak being before God. But God was mindful of such a man and visited him. He gave man glory and honor, and made him rule over the works of His hands. Yet in this psalm there is a word we must pay special attention to. It is verse 2: “Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.” God is the One who has set His great glory above the heavens. But when He reveals His strength, He does not necessarily use the mouths of those who are strong in the world. God said that He ordains strength out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants. He said that through the mouths of those who look weak and insignificant in the world, He silences the enemy and the avenger.

Psalm 9 is a passage that shows together the righteous judgment of God and His salvation. David gives thanks to God with his whole heart and praises Him. But this thanksgiving did not come merely from a single victory or from prosperity. David saw the throne of God. He saw that God is the One who judges in righteousness, destroys the wicked, becomes a refuge for the oppressed, and does not forget the cry of the poor. The last prayer of Psalm 9 shows well the deep meaning of this whole passage: “Put them in fear, O LORD, That the nations may know themselves to be but men” (Psalm 9:20). There is something a person must know without fail before God: the fact that man is but a man. Man is not God. Nor is he a being who can solve his own sins by himself. Nor is he a being who can overcome death and judgment by his own strength. Before God, man is a finite and frail human life.

Even in a situation where his life was threatened, where the wicked were bending their bows to kill him, and where people were saying, “Flee as a bird to your mountain”, David said this: “I have already put my trust in the LORD.” People look for refuges that are visible to their eyes. They think they will live only if they flee to the mountain. They think they will be safe only if they get inside the city walls. They think they will live only if they receive the help of powerful people. But David did not speak that way. He said, “I have put my trust in the LORD.”

This does not speak only of external threats. It shows a spiritual attack that tries to shake the hearts of the righteous and tear down the foundation of faith.

Psalm 11 is a short passage, but it shows clearly what a person of faith must look to in times of crisis. David was in the midst of the threats of his enemies. It says that the wicked were bending their bows, making ready their arrows on the string, and trying to shoot the upright in heart in the dark. This does not speak only of external threats. It shows a spiritual attack that tries to shake the hearts of the righteous and tear down the foundation of faith.

In today’s Scripture passage, David cries out to God like this: “Help, LORD.” Why did David cry out to God for help? It was not only because there was war. Nor was it only because there was suffering in the flesh. The greater pain David saw was that the godly man was ceasing and the faithful were disappearing from among men. “For the godly man ceases! For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men” (Psalm 12:1). Here the godly man does not mean simply a person with a religious appearance. He means the person who has true faith before God, believes the Word of God just as it is, and holds on to the righteousness God has accomplished. The faithful, likewise, is not one who is sincere only before people, but one who holds the truth God has spoken in his heart and follows that Word to the end.
