On the way going up to Jerusalem, Jesus told His disciples beforehand about the mockery, death, and resurrection He would undergo, but on that very way the disciples were seeking who would sit in the high places. At that time the Lord made clear the purpose for which He had come, as follows: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). The Lord’s service was not a kindness bestowed from a high place; it was the act of giving His own life in order to save people who had to die because of sin. The word of Mark chapters 9 through 16 contained in this book tells of Jesus, who went this way to the very end, and of how a person who has been served by Him and has obtained life ought to live.

Ch09_01_Sermon_Look to the kingdom that the Lord will show

Jesus promised, “There are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power” (Mark 9:1). The disciples were not people who had already seen all the things that had not yet come to pass. Even so, having heard the promise the Lord made, they could wait for what He would reveal in the future. Faith has this waiting in it. It is not judging that only what is visible to us now is true, but trusting what the One who spoke will show.

Ch09_02_Sermon_Even if we have seen the glory， we must hear the word of the Son (Mark 9:2–8)

Peter saw the glory that appeared before his eyes and wanted to stay there. He said that he would build one tabernacle each for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. But the Scriptures make it clear, “Because he did not know what to say, for they were greatly afraid” (Mark 9:6). The fact of having seen an amazing sight and having realized the meaning of that sight are different things. For us, too, the faith that hears the word of Jesus is needed before a heart that wants to treasure a special experience.

To know Jesus rightly, we must not remember only His radiant appearance, but must know why He would die and how He would rise again. Admiration that leaves out the content of salvation cannot deliver a person from sin.

Jesus told them to bring the child to Him. It is the moment when it becomes clear to whom we must go when faced with a problem.

Even the disciples, who had watched at His side Jesus doing marvelous works, needed to learn the meaning of that death and resurrection.

Ch09_06_Sermon_Whoever receives one little child receives the Lord (Mark 9:33–37)

When Jesus asked, “What was it you disputed among yourselves on the road?” (Mark 9:33), the disciples kept silent. It was because they had argued with one another over who was the greatest. Jesus had taught about His death and resurrection, but the disciples were measuring who was great and who was small among themselves. Even into the steps of following Jesus, a heart that seeks to exalt itself can enter. Our craving does not disappear by itself just because we say that we are doing the Lord’s work.

The disciple John told Jesus that they had forbidden a man who did not follow them from casting out demons in the name of Jesus. Jesus said, “Do not forbid him, for no one who works a miracle in My name can soon afterward speak evil of Me” (Mark 9:39). What the disciples saw first was whether someone followed their group, but Jesus did not let them rashly stop a person who was working in His name. When we deal with people, we, too, must not put how close they are to us ahead of the Lord’s will.

Ch09_08_Sermon_The transformation that those washed as white as snow will receive (Mark 9:1–50)

Mark chapter 9 begins with the word that there are some standing here who will see the kingdom of God present with power. And after six days, Jesus took three disciples, went up on a high mountain, and was transfigured before them. His clothes became whiter than any launderer on earth could whiten them. People call this event the event of the Mount of Transfiguration. But this event does not end with the fact that Jesus alone was transfigured. As the word says, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18), He showed that a person who believes in Jesus Christ has his sins washed away as white as snow and becomes a child of God, and that just as Jesus was transfigured, we, too, are transformed in the same way.

Ch09_09_Sermon_Do not despise a person whom the Savior has accepted (Mark 9:1–50)

John the Baptist is the one who passes the sin of mankind on by giving baptism, and Jesus is the One who came to have that sin passed on to Him. By receiving baptism from John in the Jordan River, Jesus had the sin of the world passed on to Him once and for all. The sins we commit throughout our whole lives are also within that sin of the world. Since the wages of sin is death, Jesus, who bore that sin, shed His blood and died on the Cross just as the sacrificial offering of the Old Testament was killed before the altar of burnt offering, and He rose again from death and is now at the right hand of God the Father. A person who believes in this gospel of the water and the Spirit has his sins washed away as white as snow. To say that one simply believes without knowing what John the Baptist did to Jesus is not faith but superstition. Only when we know can we believe.

Ch09_10_Sermon_A person who holds everlasting life precious casts off evil stubbornness

Because the name of Christ is on him People of the world treat others coldly if they bring them no benefit. But the Lord promised, “For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward” (Mark 9:41). Ordinarily, anyone gives water. Even so, the reason He does not forget that cup of water is that it was given because the person belongs to Christ. It means that the Lord blesses a person who values the Lord’s people, and punishes a person who despises and mistreats the Lord’s people. In Mark chapter 9, there appear in turn the disciples who argued over who was the greatest, the little child set in their midst, the one who did not follow them, and the little ones who may stumble. How the Lord tells us to treat a person who has the name of Christ is the teaching of this chapter.

Looking for a clause that permits what we want is different from hearing what God wants.

Ch10_02_Sermon_The faith that receives the kingdom of God like a little child (Mark 10:13–16)

It is a scene that shows us that even those who claim to follow the Lord closely can, by their own judgment, block a person who is coming to the Lord.

We must get out of the life of coming to the Lord only when we can do well and hiding when we fall short, and at any time renew our hearts with the gospel the Lord has given.

So Jesus asked him, “No one is good but God, so why do you call Me good? You know the commandments of God, but have you kept the commandments? Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not bear false witness. Have you kept these things?” The young man answered, “Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth.” Jesus said to the young man, “There is one thing you lack: Sell all the possessions you have and give to the poor. Then you will have treasure in heaven.” That is what He said. It is written that at this one word, telling him to sell all his possessions, distribute them to the poor, and follow Him, the young man who was rich in heart changed countenance and left. Jesus went on to say that it is very hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. He said that it is so hard to enter the kingdom of God that it is harder for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. So when the disciples asked who could enter the kingdom of God, Jesus said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible” (Mark 10:27).

No matter how many possessions or works or how much fame one has, one cannot get past the judgment for sin. It is not only those who merely have much money who cannot enter; those who are rich in heart, with much rightness, greatness, and stubbornness of their own, cannot enter either.

When we look at this passage, there are two kinds of desires. One desire was the desire of James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who asked, “In Your glory, grant us the two highest seats, one on Your left and one on Your right.” These disciples had one desire and hope while following Jesus around, and it was the desire that, when the Lord took hold of royal power on this earth, Jesus would become King and they would be seated in the seats on the King’s right and left. In human terms, one might think that could be so, but seen spiritually, it was a desire far too removed from the will of Jesus.

Jesus told His disciples to bring a colt, and He rode on it and entered the city of Jerusalem. Did Jesus have to enter riding on a colt because there were no horses or other animals in this world? That is not so. Jesus specifically designated that He would go riding on a colt. That colt was a colt that had never once carried a person, and a colt that had never once pulled a load. It was an animal that had never once done anything. Thinking of it by common sense, would such a colt stay still while carrying Jesus? Would it not kick and leap and make a great commotion? Yet Jesus insisted that He would enter riding on a colt, and so He rode on it. And there is no word that the colt went wild. There is only the word that it went in well. Then what is the meaning this colt gives us? The first lesson it gives us is that we ourselves are this colt.

In following the Lord, becoming distant from one’s children or parents naturally follows as well. If we say we cannot do such things, how can we follow the Lord?

You must admit that your flesh is one that is to perish, and you must break your plans, too. You must break your bright ideas, too. Since the Lord wants this gospel to be preached to the whole world, we must break ourselves. Even if it is hard to follow, even if we have no confidence, we must follow. If we do not follow, what will we do? We must ask ourselves what would happen if we did not follow the Lord to the end, if we did not serve the Lord to the end, and we must come up with the answer ourselves. Do you think it would be comfortable not to follow? You may think, why not go out into the world, earn some money, and live the life of the flesh, eating and drinking? If you want to do so, you may do so.

Ch11_05_Sermon_Have a desire in your heart and live by faith

Living and dying while striving to the death to eat well and live well only for oneself is one lifetime, and yielding one’s heart after being born again, believing in the word of God, breaking one’s own flesh, and serving the Lord until one departs is also one lifetime. A lifetime is the same either way. But which is better? We must count the cost. The Lord told us to count the cost when we follow Him. “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it” (Luke 14:28). It means, would one not count the cost before building a tall tower? He also said, “Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace” (Luke 14:31–32). It means that when the enemy army is invading and our army is small and our tactics are weak, we should quickly send a delegation and ask for conditions of peace. It means that we should make peace, saying that we will pay so much in tribute every year, so please let us keep our country. The Lord told us to count the cost and then follow. That is why the Lord also said that whoever wants to become His disciple must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Him. If we follow without counting the cost, we regret it. When one has followed for quite a while, having come along following what one could not even follow, and one regrets having followed this far since one cannot follow anyway, it becomes resentment in the heart.

The disciples met with what He had spoken of at the place to which they were sent, and they answered just as they had heard from Jesus and brought the colt. The One who prepared this way was Jesus, and the disciples, following His word, took part in the work that had been prepared.

The temple behind the sound of welcome Mark reports, “Jesus went into Jerusalem and into the temple. So when He had looked around at all things” (Mark 11:11). Earlier, many people spread their clothes on the road and praised Him, but the text does not repeat that welcome at length. It records that the Lord’s gaze turned toward the temple. The Lord is not One who looks only at the outward appearance of people welcoming Him. He looks at what is actually being done in that place where people claim to serve God.

Jesus, having come out from Bethany, was hungry. Seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if there was something on it, but there was nothing on the tree but leaves. The Scripture records together with this, “For it was not the season for figs” (Mark 11:13). It was not that the Lord made a wasted trip because He did not know the season for bearing fruit; He went because He had something to teach through that tree with nothing but abundant leaves. That He sought fruit even though it was not the season means that the Lord requires of us not a life lived according to the natural order, but a life lived by faith in God. Therefore we must examine, together with the events that follow, what the word He spoke before the fruitless tree reveals. What the disciples heard was the Lord’s word that no one would ever again eat fruit from that tree.

Such patience is not a waiting that does nothing, but faith that continues to do what is needed while believing the Lord’s promise.

God wants us to have faith that believes in God. If there is anything God requires of us, it is that He wants there to be faith in our hearts that believes in God. Depending on whether or not we have faith in God, we not only receive blessings before God and are saved from sin, but are also set free from the devil, and the desires of our hearts and all our dreams come true. God has required faith in God of you and me, and of all the people of this world. The question is whether we have faith in God or do not have faith.

When we fulfill the labor entrusted to us and serve the gospel with one heart together with other saints, the thanksgiving we confessed with our lips continues in our lives as well. We do not supplement the Lord’s salvation with our labor; rather, we serve His work with the joy of having been saved.

We must not think that because the Lord is the Son of God, He must also have felt the pain lightly.

Ch15_01_Sermon_Why the King who bore our sins was silent before Pilate (Mark 15:1–5)

The Bible describes the beginning of this trial, saying, “Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate” (Mark 15:1). Because many people believed in and followed Jesus more than the teachers of Judaism who taught the law, those teachers feared that Judaism would collapse, and so they framed it as though a rebellion had broken out in Israel, which was then a vassal state of Rome, and handed Jesus over to the Roman governor. Pilate asked Jesus whether He was the King of the Jews. Jesus answered that what he said was right. In people’s eyes, the sight of being bound and interrogated and the identity of a king do not seem to fit together. However, the fact that He was bound by the hands of people did not change the true identity of the Lord.

If a person who is accused of many things says nothing, it can turn against him, yet Jesus braved that risk and did not answer. This is because the One who was accomplishing salvation for us did not make it His aim to get only Himself out of that place. Isaiah recorded this scene beforehand as follows: “He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth” (Isaiah 53:7). The Lord was silent because, like a lamb led to the slaughter, He was on the way to receive the judgment for our sins.

To save us, such as we are, Jesus, who is God, came in a human body, and by receiving baptism from John at the Jordan River, He had all the sins of the world passed on to Him once and for all. All our sins from our past days and today up to the day we die are also included in them. According to the righteous law of God, which says, “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23), the Lord, who had our sins passed on to Him, shed His blood and died on the Cross, receiving the judgment for sin in our place. In the human court it was an unjust trial, but before God it was a just trial. And He rose again from death. By believing in this gospel of the water and the Spirit, we receive the remission of sins. The basis on which we are set free is not our own innocence but the atonement that the Lord accomplished.

The soldiers led Jesus into the courtyard and called together the whole garrison. They imitated the courtesy due to a king, but there was no reverence in their hearts. Striking Him on the head with a reed, spitting on Him, and kneeling were all mockery as well. While putting the word “king” on their lips, they actually despised the Lord. Since Jesus had said that He was the King of the Jews, they sought to put Him to death by pinning on Him the charge of being a rebel against the Roman emperor, and this mockery was a preliminary preparation they carried out before crucifying Him.

However, the fact that Simon bore the wooden cross does not mean that he became the Savior who bore our sins. The One who receives the judgment for sin in our place is Jesus, who hung on the Cross. We must distinguish between the labor of man and the atonement that the Lord accomplishes.

The disciples could no longer see the Lord, who had been before their eyes, as they had before, but this did not mean that the Lord had become powerless or had disappeared. He is the Lord who is alive at the right hand of God even now. And the Holy Spirit is in the hearts of those who have received the remission of sins by believing in the baptism of Jesus and the Cross, so He is with us through the Holy Spirit and proves our salvation.

At such times, the hearts of those who have the faith that they will live again and of those who do not are completely different. Mark chapter 16 begins with the news about Jesus, who was crucified, “He is risen! He is not here” (Mark 16:6), and continues on to the scene in which the Lord rebukes the disciples who did not believe that resurrection.

If one reads this word only according to the letter, it sounds as though a born-again person must take up serpents and drink poison every day to prove his own faith. However, this word is a spiritual word given to born-again people, and it is power that was given because it was needed for preaching the gospel. The flow of Mark chapter 16 shows this.
