The Philippians Biblical Exposition series you are now listening to consists of four chapters in total and covers Philippians chapters 1 through 4. The content is organized by topic and divided into three sections: Biblical Exposition, Sermon, and Questions and Answers.

This book offers a fresh understanding of the Epistle to the Philippians from the perspective of the 'gospel of the water and the Spirit.'

When we hold fast to the truth that Jesus took the sins of the whole world upon Himself by being baptized by John, suffered judgment on the Cross, and was resurrected, the true source of Paul’s joy becomes absolutely clear.

Paul discarded everything he once boasted of as rubbish, proclaiming instead the righteousness received from God through faith alone. Those who believe in the gospel of the water and the Spirit have already been delivered from sin and granted citizenship in heaven. Even though our flesh is weak, we are never again placed under condemnation; this is the root of true joy that remains unshaken in any circumstance.

Salvation has been accomplished completely, once and for all. Now, we must believe in this gospel with all our hearts and live boldly, sharing it in our new life. This book serves as a clear guide along that path.

● Scripture quotations used in this book are from the ‘New King James Version (NKJV)’, ‘American Standard Version (ASV)’.

● This audiobook is an original human creation based on the sermons of Rev. Paul C. Jong. To provide clear delivery and a comfortable listening experience, AI technology was employed only for the voice generation.

The church in Philippi was the first church Paul established in the region of Macedonia, and it had a relationship of deep love and cooperation with him. That is why this letter is filled not with rebuke but with thanksgiving, joy, and exhortation. Chapter 1 proceeds from greetings and a prayer of thanksgiving, to a report on Paul’s own circumstances in prison, and then to an exhortation toward a life worthy of the gospel. In what follows, we will first explain each passage from a general point of view, and then look into its meaning together from the perspective of the gospel of the water and the Spirit.

Philippians chapter 1 is the opening of the letter that the Apostle Paul sent to the church in Philippi while he was imprisoned.

Why did he give thanks? Because from the first day until now they had fellowship in the gospel. They were not people who merely said with their lips that they believed in Jesus. They were people who had fellowship together in the gospel Paul preached, that is, the gospel of the water and the Spirit—that Jesus Christ bore the sins of the world by receiving baptism, received the judgment of those sins on the Cross, and rose again, and so saved us completely.

Paul was shut up in prison. He was put in chains while preaching the gospel. Seen with fleshly eyes, his situation looked very unfortunate. He had no freedom, his future was uncertain, and he did not know when he might die.

When we read Philippians, the epistle of the Apostle Paul, we can see fully what kind of faith the Apostle Paul had and what his spiritual state was. The Apostle Paul confessed that whether he lived or died, he wanted Christ to be magnified in his body, and that for him to live was Christ, so to die was also gain. This is truly great faith. It means his whole heart was directed solely toward God. In body and in heart, he set the purpose of his life on Christ being magnified. He existed because of Christ, worked for Christ, ate for Christ, and lived for Christ. He existed only for the will and purpose of Christ. We see that there was nothing at all for his own purposes.

The Apostle Paul established the church in Philippi during his second missionary journey. The time is placed at around A.D. 50. Paul originally intended to preach the Word in Asia, but the Holy Spirit prevented him, and at Troas he came to see a vision. It was the vision in which “a man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us’” (Acts 16:9). Paul and his company took this as God’s calling and crossed over to Macedonia, and the Scripture says, “And from there to Philippi, which is the foremost city of that part of Macedonia, a colony” (Acts 16:12). So the church in Philippi became the first church Paul established on European soil.

At the root of that humility and oneness lies one truth: that Jesus Christ, who emptied Himself and became obedient to the point of death, has delivered us from sin and made us righteous through the baptism He received from John the Baptist, His death on the Cross, and His resurrection. This chapter proceeds from the exhortation to be of one mind, to the example of Christ who humbled Himself, to the exhortation to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, and then to the example of two fellow workers who served with the heart of a bondservant. In what follows, we will first explain each passage from a general point of view, and then look into its meaning together from the perspective of the gospel of the water and the Spirit.

Philippians chapter 2 deals with the oneness and humility of Christians.

That we can serve the Lord on this earth is truly great grace. To be able to worship with a healthy body, to praise with our lips, to pray with our hearts, and to serve the gospel with our hands and feet is not a blessing given to just anyone. When a person is healthy, he hardly knows how precious that health is. But when the time comes that the body aches, the throat hurts, the eyes grow weary, and it is hard even to think properly, we realize afresh how blessed a thing it is to serve the Lord with a healthy body. Therefore we must serve the Lord while our bodies are healthy. We must serve while we have time, serve while we have strength, and do the Lord’s work while our hearts are stirred. We say, “I will do it someday,” but that someday is not always given to us. If the Lord has given us health today, given us faith, given us the church, and entrusted the gospel to us, then today we must serve that gospel.

Consolation, comfort, the fellowship of the Spirit, affection, and mercy are all graces that those who have received the remission of sins have received together. Since we have been delivered by the same gospel of the water and the Spirit and become brothers and sisters, we must live according to the word, “Being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind” (Philippians 2:2). That love goes as far as looking out for the affairs of others and supplying what they lack. The church in Philippi supplying the needs of Paul in prison (Philippians 4:18) is the example of this.

Paul warns against the false teaching that seeks to be justified by the works of the law, and confesses that he counts as rubbish every credential he once could have boasted of, holding fast only to the knowledge of Christ. That faith is the faith that believes the truth that Jesus removed all our sins through the baptism He received from John the Baptist, His death on the Cross, and His resurrection. He then shows us a life that does not stop but presses on toward the goal, and closes the chapter by declaring that our citizenship is in heaven. In what follows, we will first explain each passage from a general point of view, and then look into its meaning together from the perspective of the gospel of the water and the Spirit.

Philippians chapter 3 is a chapter that deals with true righteousness and the goal of faith.

Paul first exhorts the church to harmony, then teaches the way to entrust anxiety to God in prayer and enjoy His peace, and confesses a life of contentment in the Lord who gives strength in every circumstance. He then commends the support of the church in Philippi as a sweet-smelling sacrifice, promises God’s supply, and closes the letter with final greetings and a blessing of grace. In what follows, we will first explain each passage from a general point of view, and then look into its meaning together from the perspective of the gospel of the water and the Spirit.

Beloved saints, in today’s passage the Apostle Paul said to the saints of Philippi, “Rejoice in the Lord always” (Philippians 4:4). And once again he exhorted, “Again I will say, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4). This word does not simply mean to keep a cheerful mood. It means that the one who is in the Lord—the one who has received the remission of sins by believing in the baptism of Jesus Christ and the blood of the Cross—has ground before God for rejoicing.
