Reflection Questions:

1. The story of Rahab is well known. She is famous. Did you learn anything new? How was the sermon on Joshua 2 impactful for you?

2. What difference does it make in your life that, like Rahab stated, “…the Lord your God, is God in heaven above and on earth below.” (Joshua 2:11)

3. Isn’t it interesting that Rahab is celebrated in the New Testament by Matthew, Hebrews, and James? (Matthew 1:5-6; Hebrews 11:31; James 2:25-26) Why do you think James uses Rahab as an example of “Faith without works is dead?” 

4. Right now, are you hanging tightly to a rope that is being lowered by someone else – why and who is on the Rahab end of the rope?  And, who are you lowering – who is depending on you for their spiritual life? That’s a lot of responsibility. How can we help you stay strong for someone you care about? 

5. Bonus discussion: Vern said Rahab did a bad thing but did the right thing. How is that possible? Can you think of other similar circumstances? Have you ever faced such an ethical dilemma? 

6. A mind-bending morality-challenging deeper dive:

Ethicists offer three main views:

     A. The “Lie was sinful but used by God” view.

* Rahab did the right thing (protecting life)

* But used a wrong method (lying – a violation of the 9th commandment)

* God honored her faith despite moral imperfection.

This keeps moral absolutes intact.

     B. The “Higher moral law” view.

* Protecting life is more important that telling the truth.

This is called “graded absolutism.”

     C. The “Wartime ethics” view

* She lied in a time of war.

* Deception in war (like espionage) is not morally equivalent to everyday lying.

This is military resistance, not private morality.

7. From this, what do we learn about God and His relationship with us?

2. Big Idea: Jesus did not come to cancel people, but to cancel sin.
Read Colossians 2:13-14, John 3:16-18
How does it feel to know that Jesus has cancelled your sin but will never cancel you? How can we know that Jesus will never cancel us? How does this change how we might respond to our failures in this life?

3. When you reflect on the resurrection of Jesus what gives you hope and encourages your heart?

4. Read Philippians 3:10-11
How have you experienced the power of the resurrection in your life? (ie. How has your life changed? How have you experienced a growing relationship with Jesus? How have you seen the power of Jesus at work in your life?)

5. Paul says that part of knowing Jesus is participating in the same kind of suffering that He experienced. What kind of suffering did Jesus experience in his life? Why can this be a comforting thought when we are experiencing pain and suffering and loss in our life? Why is it important to understand that that suffering is a normal part of knowing and walking with Jesus?

6. Read 1 Corinthians 15:20
Jesus’ physical resurrection is called the first fruits of our resurrection. What does this verse mean? Reflect on the reality that you will be given a physical body for all of eternity that will not age, decay, get sick, experience pain or loss, suffering, or death…What thoughts does this bring to mind? How does that hit you emotionally? What questions does it raise for you? What hope does this give us? Why?

How are other believers intended to be an extension of God’s comfort to us in the midst of our pain and suffering? How have you seen God use other people to be a source of comfort for you? How have you been a source of comfort to others? Share some specific examples…

6. Why would isolation be detrimental to someone in the midst of suffering? Why can we tend toward isolation? How can we break through our tendency to isolate? What will that require of us?

8. What specifically do we need from others in our suffering in order to experience comfort? What things from others can actually be unhelpful, even if offered with good motives?

3. Jesus said the defining characteristic of an ALL IN follower is seen in our love for one another. How would you evaluate your love for other followers? How would you evaluate other followers' love for you?

9. How might Sunday Gatherings be different if everyone showed up with a mindset to know and love other people? What is something practical you can do this week to approach our gatherings differently?

1. When you realize that the invitation to follow Jesus means we actually are expected to become like Him, how do you respond to that idea?  Why can that thought be overwhelming?  Does this seem impossible?  Why or why not?

What were the two uses of the word “yoke” that Jesus is referring to here?  Describe the imagery of being “yoked” to Jesus like two oxen?  How does that imagery help us understand how we are to walk our life with Jesus?  How does this help us to become like Jesus?

3. If we are weary and burdened in our life, what does that say to us about our walk with Jesus and our connection to Him?  How can Jesus actually make our yoke easy and our burden light?  Does that mean that everything in life will be easy and light?  Why or why not?

4. True life in Jesus is found when we surrender our lives fully to Him.  What does it mean to surrender fully to Jesus?  Why can that word be difficult for us to deal with?  What makes actually surrendering difficult for you?

5. How does surrendering to Jesus actually bring freedom and life to our souls?  Explain.   What things in this life can we become free of through surrendering?  Explain.

6. The opposite of surrender is control?  How can trying to control everything in life be exhausting?  (making us weary and burdened)

3. In verse 18, Paul states that our current sufferings “are not worth comparing” with future glory. What could make it difficult for us to believe this in your life today?

4. Romans 8:18 speaks of the Christian’s future glorification, when we will become a “perfected people”. Read and respond to the following definition: “In glorification, believers attain complete conformity to the image and likeness of the glorified Christ and are freed from both physical and spiritual defect. Glorification ensures that believers will never again experience bodily decay, death, or illness, and will never again struggle with sin.

5. Jim used the illustration of holding a 3x5 card marked “suffering” close to his eyes before moving it away to gain perspective. What helps you keep the proper perspective on suffering? How can others assist you in this?

6. Romans 8:19–21 depict creation yearning for renewal. What does this reveal about the extent of God’s redemption? Romans 8 shows that both believers and creation are longing for freedom. How can we live today as people who hold onto hope in a world still affected by decay?

1. In Romans 7, Paul describes his internal battle with sin. How would you describe your own battle to overcome sin in your life?

1. When you were a child, who did you naturally turn to for help? What did that teach you about trust?

2. Read Psalm 121 aloud together. Which phrases or verses stood out to you, and why?

3. The psalm begins with a question: “Where does my help come from?” How would most people you know answer that? How do you respond?

2. Thomas was honest enough with himself and the other disciples that he was disappointed with the resurrection. Do you have a group of people you can be that vulnerable with?

Reflection Questions:
1) In his sermon, Jim shared the story of calling his mother after the birth of their first child. Reflect on a moment when you had the chance to share good news with someone special. What was the good news? Was it easy to tell them? How did that experience make you feel?

2) Generally, sharing good news with others is easy. But is it easy for you to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others? If it’s not, why does it feel challenging for you?

3) In Acts 17:16-34, Luke recounts the story of the Apostle Paul’s visit to Athens. When he saw the city, we were told, “he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols” (Acts 17:16b). Why do you believe he was so distressed by the rampant idolatry?

4) When you look at American culture, do you see us as a nation “full of idols”? Tim Keller’s definition of idolatry helps answer that question. He writes, “What is an idol? It is anything more important to you than God, anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, anything you seek to give you what only God can give.” (Counterfeit Gods, xvii) According to his definition, which idols do we see in ourselves and others as worshiping?

5) In Athens, Paul preached the gospel to three distinct groups of people in three separate locations: the Jews in the synagogue (17:17a), philosophers in the marketplace (17:17b-18), and intellectuals at the Areopagus (17:18-31). How did he adjust his approach without compromising the message of the gospel?

6) Who do you know with little or no background in the Bible or the gospel? How would you explain the gospel to them differently than someone from a church background?

7) Bob Pierce, the founder of World Vision, prayed to God, “Break my heart with the things that break Your heart.” What troubles your heart about your friends and our community? What specific needs do you notice? What do you believe God is urging you to do in response?

8) In the sermon, the analogy of a traffic light was used to illustrate the three different responses that those who heard Paul preach the gospel had to his message. Acts 17:32-34 states, “When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, (red light) but others said, “We want to hear you again on this subject.” (yellow light) 33 At that, Paul left the Council. 34 Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed. (green light). Why is it important to recognize that responses to the preaching of the gospel can vary widely, from mockery to curiosity and, hopefully, belief? What color is your “stoplight”?

Reflection Questions:
1. What are the things that cause worry for people these days? What are the things that cause worry for you?
2. Jesus asked, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” What point is Jesus trying to make about worry? What does worry produce in our life that don’t want?
3. Jesus said that “your heavenly Father knows that you need them.” What difference would it make in your life if you knew without a doubt that the Father knew and understood what you were going through, even if your circumstances didn’t change?
4. Jesus tells us that worry is evidence of a faith problem. How does worry indicate that we are viewing something incorrectly about our heavenly Father?
5. Read Philippians 4:6-7: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. --- Why does a heart of gratitude (thanksgiving) help remove a heart of worry? How can you tangibly practice gratitude when you are worried?
6. Read Philippians 4:8: Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Reflection Questions:
1. How did your parents resolve conflicts between you and your siblings? What's the best advice you've received for dealing with anger?
2. Matthew 5:21-26 is the first of what has been called the "Six Antitheses." It is a series of statements in Matthew 5:21-48, where Jesus contrasts the "You have heard it said..." in culture with the "But I tell you..." of Jesus' teachings. Dallas Willard created a chart highlighting the differences in his book "The Divine Conspiracy" (page 146). Please read and discuss his summary of the six antitheses.

Situation | Old Righteousness | Kingdom Righteousness
a. Irritation with one’s associates. (5:21-26) | No murder. | Intense desire to be of help. No anger or contempt.
b. Sexual attraction. (5:27-30) | No intercourse. | No cultivation of lust.
c. Unhappiness with marriage partner. (5:31-32) | If you divorce, give “pink slip”. | No divorce, as then practiced.
d. Wanting someone to believe something. (5:33-37) | Keep vows or oaths made to convince. | Only say how things are or are not. No verbal manipulation.
e. Being personally injured. (5:38-42) | Inflict exactly the same injury on the offender. | Don’t harm, but help, the one who has damaged you.
f. Having an enemy. (5:43-48) | Hate your enemy. | Love & bless your enemy, as the heavenly Father does.

3. Read Matthew 5:23-24. Is there someone the Holy Spirit is prompting you “to go and be reconciled to”?How does Jesus develop a connection between anger and murder? And why is it so essential to guard your heart against anger and contempt?
4. How do you distinguish between so-called righteous and unrighteous anger? Can you recall examples in the New Testament when Jesus expressed righteous anger? Read and discuss Paul’s teaching about anger in Ephesians 5:26-32.
5. In the sermon on Sunday, the question was asked, “How do we overcome anger when we’ve been overcome by anger?” What are some of the ways you have learned to overcome anger and contempt toward others?

1. What does it mean to say that Jesus was “opposed to religion?” How would you define “religion”?

Reflection Questions:
1. Read John 5:39,46 — In what ways does the Old Testament point to Jesus? What are some examples that you can think of? How can this reality change the way we read and understand the Old Testament?

2. Read Hebrews 12:5-6 — Why is it comforting to know that God tests and disciplines out of His love? What difference does this make in the midst of testing?

3. God tests us to show us where we are at and to grow us to become more like His Son. How have you experienced testing in your life? How did you respond? What did this reveal to you about yourself? How did it help you grow? Explain.

4. What could be an “Isaac” in your life? What in your life, if you lost it, would make life seem unbearable? What are you fearful of losing? What has become the center of life?

5. Read Genesis 22:1-14 — What from this story grabs your attention? What questions does it raise for you? What do you learn about God? What do you learn about yourself? How does this story connect to your life?

6. What connections to Jesus do you see in this story? How does this story point to Jesus and the cross?

7. Obedience to God is ALWAYS in our best interest. Agree or Disagree?

8. When have you found obedience difficult? How can this reveal “Isaac’s” (idols) in our life?

9. Read Romans 8:32 — How can this perspective give us courage to obey even when obedience seems difficult?

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Romans 5:8 (NIV)
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

What Gets in the Way?

Matthew 28:16-20 (NIV)
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Mark 1:14-15(NIV)
After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Reflection Questions:

1. Is it hard for you to believe that God loves you?
2. Who is God giving you the opportunity to love currently?
3. What is one small thing in great love you could do for that person this week? 4. What does that look like?
5. What obstacles or barriers do you need to overcome to make this happen?
Matthew 28 says that some doubted while worshiping. Where is your area of doubt in regards to you living this passage out? (Fear of rejection, inadequacy, impact, lack of conviction, etc)

1 Corinthians 7:26b-31 (NIV)

But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this. LIES WE BELIEVE ABOUT SINGLENESS:

“Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked.
Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

Matthew 19:28-29 (NIV)
Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.

Reflection Questions:

1. What aspects of church culture can make it challenging for single people?
2. What perspectives about singleness do we need to have in order to navigate singleness in a healthy and biblical way?
3. What is God’s perspective on singleness?
4. What are some wrong perspectives we can have about singleness? What are some lies we can believe about being single?
5. Why is important for all people in a church family to have the perspective that singleness is valuable and viable way to live out our walk of faith?
6. Reflect on these statements… Singleness does mean no intimacy. Intimacy does not mean romance/sex. Agree or Disagree? Explain. How can single people cultivate intimacy outside of romantic/sexual relationships?
7. How can married people in a church family love and care for single people? And vice versa? What are tangible ways we can love and support each other?
8. If you are married, do you have single people from the church that are close to you? How could you grow your connection with them?
9. Read Matthew 22:23-29. Why is it important to remember that none of us will be married for eternity in heaven? How does that reality impact your thinking? How does that reality change the way we view marriage and singleness?

Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs…

Reflection Questions:

1. Share a time where you asked yourself 'Why did I say that?' in reaction to a conversation.
2. Read Matthew 12:34b-35 and Matthew 15:18. When we reflect on our words and say, 'Why did I say that?', where do those words come from?
3. Read Matthew 12:36-37 and James 3:9-10. Why do our words matter?
4. Read Col. 4:6. What does a conversation full of grace look like?
5. What does a conversation seasoned with salt feel like?
6. What does it mean to have an answer for everyone?
7. If you were to analyze your conversations in light of Col 4:6, what would be the area you feel most comfortable with? How about the least comfortable with?
