The Biblical Exposition series on First Thessalonians you are now listening to consists of five chapters and covers the entire book, from chapter one through chapter five. The content is organized by topic and divided into two sections: Biblical Exposition and Sermon.

What kept the weak from falling was not a religion in word only, but the gospel of the water and the Spirit that came in power.

The young church in Thessalonica, established not long before, might well have collapsed under the persecution that pressed in from every side; yet with firm faith, love, and hope it carried the gospel throughout the whole region. What kept these weak people from falling? It was not a religion delivered in word only, but the gospel of the water and the Spirit, which came in power, in the Holy Spirit, and in much assurance.

This book opens the five chapters of First Thessalonians anew with that very gospel. It is the gospel by which Jesus received baptism from John the Baptist and bore the sin of the world, was judged in our place for that sin on the cross, and rose again from death, delivering us from sin and death. This gospel of the water and the Spirit is the power of God that turns a sinner into a righteous one, and turns the fear of death into living hope.

If you desire a faith unshaken in the last days, open this book. Here is the sure word by which you receive the remission of sins—life and true comfort for you.

● Scripture quotations used in this book are from the ‘New King James Version (NKJV)’, ‘American Standard Version (ASV)’.

● This audiobook is an original human creation based on the sermons of Rev. Paul C. Jong. To provide clear delivery and a comfortable listening experience, AI technology was employed only for the voice generation.

The church of Thessalonica was a young church, established not long before. Yet they were people who had turned from idols to the true God and, even in the midst of many afflictions, had held firmly to the gospel. In this letter Paul carefully teaches by what gospel they were saved, how a saint who has received the remission of sins ought to live in holiness, and how they ought to wait for the Lord who will come again.

Within the opening of this short letter is packed, to an astonishing degree, who the people who serve the true God are, what they take hold of as they live, and what they hope for and await. The apostle Paul praised the church of God in the region of Thessalonica unusually much. When he wrote his letter to the church at Corinth his heart was full of anxiety, but toward this church at Thessalonica thanksgiving and joy overflowed.

It appears that after Paul left, some people doubted and slandered his motives. So Paul defends the fact that their ministry did not come from falsehood or greed but was truthful before God, and he testifies that, just as a father and a mother treat their children, they nurtured the saints of Thessalonica with love. It also holds the suffering they received and Paul’s own earnest longing to meet them again.

Even so, they did not draw back but went on as far as the region of Thessalonica and boldly preached the gospel of God. At the opening of the text Paul says, “For you yourselves know, brethren, that our coming to you was not in vain” (1 Thessalonians 2:1). It means that their entering Thessalonica and preaching the gospel was by no means in vain. For through that gospel the saints of Thessalonica accepted the gospel of the water and the Spirit and received the remission of sin, and grew firm, so that they became those who wait for the return of the Lord and spread the righteousness of Christ to those around them.

The apostle Paul and his fellow workers were imprisoned and beaten while preaching the gospel at Philippi, and they suffered much affliction and mistreatment.

First Thessalonians chapter 3 is the passage in which the apostle Paul honestly reveals his deep love and anxiety for the saints of Thessalonica, and the joy he felt on hearing the news that their faith was firm. Paul had unavoidably to be away from Thessalonica, and, far off, he was anxious lest the newly established church, unable to bear affliction, be shaken. So he sent Timothy to look into them, and he was greatly comforted by the good news Timothy brought. This chapter, passing through that anxiety and comfort, closes with an earnest prayer for them.

If chapters 1 through 3 looked back on the relationship and the thanksgiving between Paul and the saints of Thessalonica, from chapter 4 he exhorts concretely on how the saints ought actually to live. It is largely divided into two parts. The first part is practical exhortation on holy living, brotherly love, and faithful labor; the latter part is teaching on the saints who have died and the coming of the Lord. In particular, the last section is a word of comfort that brings the hope of resurrection and the second coming to saints who had sorrowed before death.

This is because, when a saint passes by in ignorance of what he ought to know, that ignorance becomes, rather, the root of great confusion and pain. And chief among these, the truth we must without fail rightly hold on to today is the coming of the Lord and the rapture of the saints.

The saint must believe the fact that the Lord comes again, but he must not try to calculate the day and hour by his own reckoning. The exact time of the Second Coming is a matter that belongs to God. What is important is not to know the date, but to be awake so that one can stand by faith whenever the Lord comes.

But Paul goes on at once to say, “But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief” (1 Thessalonians 5:4). Outwardly it seems that yesterday and today are hardly different, but if we open our eyes just a little and look, we can see that the world is greatly shaking from its very foundations. The economy is shaking, people’s hearts are changing, disease rages here and there, and news of war and disaster does not cease. It has become an age in which it takes no long span for a nation to collapse, and a single moment suffices for one person’s life to be overturned.

This is because they already knew perfectly the character of that day. The one thing Paul emphasized is clear: the day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night. A thief does not come after giving notice. He gives no advance warning and takes no care to allow time to prepare. At the moment a person is most off guard, at the hour he is most deeply asleep, he draws near without a sound. At the root of this word the apostle Paul delivered to the believers of Thessalonica lies one astonishing fact. It is that Jesus Christ came to this earth for us, received baptism from John the Baptist in the Jordan River and took the sins of the whole human race upon Himself, was judged for the price of that sin on the cross and shed His blood and died, and rose again on the third day. Paul nails down that the purpose of all this work was “that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him” (1 Thessalonians 5:10). That is, the destination of all that the Lord did is that we live forever together with Him.

It was a truly thankful and joyful thing. That one soul was delivered from its sin and moved from darkness into light means that a thing more precious than the whole world took place among us. Jesus too likened the joy of heaven to the joy of a shepherd who found one lost sheep, so it is only right that we rejoice together before this news.
