This was a bittersweet time for Norm and me as there were shift changes and I was offered to be the full-time, in-studio producer for David Brudnoy. David and I had worked together quite a bit but it was on a fill-in basis. That meant that Norm and I would not be together all weekend long. I would still book all his guests, join in on the phone and in studio when I could and continue to work with him outside with the Old Time Radio show we would do around the area. It was hard for me to tell him without choking up but he understood I had to keep following my radio dreams and be full time (only to be lose that later and get thrown back to a part time weekend (silver lining, Norm and I were back together) and some weird 2-5 am shift on Friday and Saturday mornings. I won’t get into why this happened at this time so I’ll leave this discussion with a cliffhanger!

Norm left the book at home. It was only the 2^nd day in the new WBZ studios and the ensuing growing pains left Norm all discombobulated. Davenport was a great guest with lots of fun info and tidbits about celebrities. He had also authored some other creative books on celebrity children names, celeb pet names and more.

Our next guest was Sonia DiTomasso, Director of Public Relations for the Animal Rescue League of Boston – talks about Morris the Cat making an appearance to support their effort to raise funds for homeless animal shelters.

Ok. What better way to close out the month of fools then to use a DBG from MAY 1^st. The year was 1994.

A few broadcast notes before we get to the game:

Some brief static invades the show early and was a sign of the impending doom to come. We have a short section of garbled tape that IS audible to a degree. It’s funny as we slow down and speed up and that gives us our title: Not So Pitch Perfect

The worst of it only lasts approx. 5 minutes. After the 15.00 mark, the devil has been exorcised, and we return to clarity! Our title also describes the many puns and jokes that fail miserably.

When I choose these tapes and archive them digitally, I set a timer, start the process and walk away. When it’s time to take copious notes and write my open and close I’m hearing it for the first time.

The chances of choosing an episode from April that would have Norm playing the peepers is high. The chances of that episode being exactly 30 years to the day, April 2^nd, 1995, that I went on my quest to record peepers for 2025? With car passing by as well? Methinks, rather slim.

And that’s what has happened this week as I was out recording on April 2^nd, 2025.

I have a confession to make. I do believe last week’s episode was misdated as today’s show is almost an exact copy only 2 years later!

It’s a DBG from November 23^rd, 1995. Last week had the same info but was dated the 22^nd.

On this, the 28^th anniversary on Norm’s passing, let’s not be sad but enjoy this frightfully good Halloween themed broadcast.

We have a NNS from October 28^th and 29^th, 1995 the title of which shall be: Found Treasures!

It all begins with a Show Open and then Norm talks about the upcoming guests. The second guest, Laurie Jacobson, author of Hollywood Haunted: A Ghostly Tour of Filmland was not on this tape. However, we get one of my favorite annual October guests, Robert Ellis “Bob” Cahill whose latest book was New England Pirates and Lost Treasures. It’s his 14^th or 17^th 0r 20^th book about offbeat, weird and creepy New England. 

Part two, if you will, of our ghostly good time, after the excellent Cahill interview, we are treated to some terrifying tales and sinister songs from an Old-Time Radio program that was broadcast on, I believe, WJUL 1230 AM which was based in Lowell back then. It’s call letters are now used for a station in Hiawassee, GA.

You will feast on one of the creepiest songs I’d never heard…The Hearse Song. Then we get 2 stories. I’m not sure of the titles but I’m going with: I Am Shadow and Me Tie Dodie Walker.

Next is another sing-a-long: The King Kong Stomp

And we close it out with two more stories: Monsters on the Prairie and The Haunting Hour with what I believe the titlewas If the Shoe Fits. Insert asterisk because we have an inadvertent cliffhanger as the tape ran out. A note written on the cassette says there may be another tape with the conclusion but, in keeping with the season, it remains a mystery!
