The Matthew Biblical Exposition series you are now listening to consists of twenty-eight chapters and is divided into six volumes. This first volume covers Matthew chapters one through four. The content is organized by topic and divided into three sections: Biblical Exposition, Sermon, and Questions and Answers.

The four Gospels record the ministry of Jesus, who came into this world, called His disciples, preached the gospel of the kingdom of heaven with them, and saved sinners.

Matthew chapters 1–4 testify that He is the promised King and Savior, through the genealogy and birth of Jesus, the ministry of John the Baptist, the baptism and temptation of Jesus, and the proclamation of the gospel of the kingdom of heaven and the calling of the disciples.

At the center of these accounts is the baptism of Jesus recorded in Matthew 3:13–17. Through this baptism, all the sins of the world were passed on to Jesus, the Holy Spirit came down upon Him, and God the Father testified that He was His beloved Son. Jesus received on the Cross the judgment for the sins He had borne and rose again to complete salvation.

Believe in this gospel of the water and the Spirit with your heart, receive the remission of all sins, and discover the joy and freedom that the children of God enjoy.

● Scripture quotations used in this book are from the ‘New King James Version (NKJV)’, ‘American Standard Version (ASV)’.

● This audiobook is an original human creation based on the sermons of Rev. Paul C. Jong. To provide clear delivery and a comfortable listening experience, AI technology was employed only for the voice generation.

Church tradition has regarded Matthew the tax collector in Matthew 9:9 and Levi in Mark 2:14 and Luke 5:27 as the same person. However, since the Gospel texts do not directly state that Levi is Matthew, it is more accurate to introduce this as the traditional view that they are the same person, rather than to assert that Matthew’s original name was Levi. When Jesus called him as he was sitting at the tax office, he left everything and followed Him (Matthew 9:9), and he afterward became one of the twelve apostles (Matthew 10:3).

It first introduces Jesus as “the Son of David, the Son of Abraham,” and records the genealogy that runs from Abraham through David and the time of the Babylonian captivity down to Christ. This genealogy includes not only the forefathers of faith and kings, but also women of such diverse backgrounds as Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and the wife of Uriah, as well as people who had human faults and failures. The history of mankind broke down many times, but the history of salvation that God had promised was never stopped. Next, it records how Mary was found with child of the Holy Spirit before she came to live with Joseph, and the anguish of Joseph, who came to know this. Through an angel, God tells Joseph that the baby conceived in Mary is of the Holy Spirit, and that he shall call His name Jesus. Jesus is the One who will save His people from their sins, and at the same time He is the One who fulfills the promise of “Immanuel,” that God is with man. Joseph believes the word of God, takes Mary in as his wife, and names the baby Jesus.

Joseph believes the word of God, takes Mary in as his wife, and names the baby Jesus.

Matthew chapter 1 is a chapter that reveals who Jesus is through the genealogy and birth of Jesus Christ. Looking at this Word and looking at this age, I myself truly thank and thank God. Matthew chapter 1 says, the book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham, and then the genealogy continues: “Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers… and Jesse begot David the king” (Matthew 1:2–6). From Abraham to David, faith was passed down truly well like this, and we can see the work of God. But what was it like from Solomon, the son of David, until they were taken away to Babylon? They served idols, committed the sin of changing the law of sacrifice and serving idols, and did things that stood against God. Even after they were taken to Babylon the descendants continued, until at last Jesus Christ was born.

It seems many people attend church and then quit, and there are also many who move from this church to that church. Of course, there must also be many cases of people moving to another church because they move to another area.

It seems many people attend church and then quit, and there are also many who move from this church to that church. So various ministers of the world’s churches are saying that perhaps, as in the Catholic Church, people should have to bring a certificate of transfer. Of course, there must also be many cases of people moving to another church because they move to another area.

The wise men from the East, guided by the star, came to find Jesus and worshiped Him, but Herod, who was then the king of Judea, sought to kill the baby Jesus in order to protect his own kingship. Through dreams God made the wise men return another way, and He directed Joseph to take Mary and the baby Jesus and flee to Egypt. Herod committed the cruel deed of killing the male children two years old and under in Bethlehem and its vicinity, but under God’s protection Jesus survived. After Herod died, Joseph’s family returned to Israel, and being guided by God again, they settled in Nazareth of Galilee. In this whole course of events, Jesus is the promised King, and the word of God is surely fulfilled even amid human evil and threats.

The wise men from the East traveled a long road to come and worship the baby Jesus, but Herod tried to kill Jesus to protect his own kingship. Seen with man’s eyes, Herod was a strong king who could move soldiers with one command, and the baby Jesus looked like a frail being who had to be protected in His parents’ arms. But the conclusion of Matthew chapter 2 is clear: those who sought the baby’s life died, and Jesus lived and returned to the land of Israel.

John the Baptist cried out in the wilderness of Judea, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” (Matthew 3:2). As “The voice of one crying in the wilderness” that Isaiah had prophesied, he turned the hearts of the people back to God and prepared them to receive the Christ who was soon to appear. The people of Jerusalem, all Judea, and the region around the Jordan came out to him, confessed their sins, and were baptized in the Jordan River. But to the Pharisees and Sadducees, who relied on their bloodline and religious standing, John the Baptist sternly warned that they must bear fruits worthy of repentance. Distinguishing the water baptism that he administered from the ministry of the Christ who was to come, he testified that Christ is the Savior and the Judge who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire and separate the wheat from the chaff. Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John the Baptist. John the Baptist tried to prevent this, but Jesus said, “Thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15). When Jesus was baptized and came up from the water, the heavens were opened and the Spirit descended like a dove, and from heaven was heard the voice of God: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). In Matthew chapter 3, John the Baptist prepared the way of repentance, Jesus fulfilled all righteousness with His baptism, and He began His public ministry amid the testimony of the Father and the Holy Spirit.

Catholicism puts forward the making of the Nicene Creed as the best thing it ever did. But although they could hold religious power by making the Nicene Creed, the people all over the world who believe in Jesus failed to receive salvation and came to perish. Even so, they think of it proudly. It is because through the Nicene Creed they established themselves as the religion of the Roman Empire and achieved religious success. But as we see it, through the Nicene Creed the believers in Jesus throughout the whole world were ruined.

Matthew chapter 4 is a chapter that records the course in which Jesus drove back the three temptations of the Devil in the wilderness with the word, began to preach the gospel of the kingdom of heaven in Galilee, called His first disciples, and taught and healed great numbers of people. Jesus was tempted after fasting for forty days, in the state of being most hungry in His flesh. The Devil used the needs of the flesh, telling Him to turn the stones into bread; he tried to make Him test God’s protection, telling Him to throw Himself down from the pinnacle of the temple; and he tempted Him with the glory of the world, saying that he would give Him all the kingdoms of the world if He would worship him. All three times Jesus drove back the temptation with the written word of God. Afterward, hearing the news that John the Baptist had been arrested, He went to Galilee and dwelt in Capernaum. This was the fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah that a great light would shine on the people who sat in darkness and the shadow of death. Jesus proclaimed, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17), and He called Peter and Andrew, James and John, to be fishers of men. They immediately left their nets, their boat, and their father behind and followed Jesus. Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in the synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of heaven, and healing all kinds of sickness and disease, and great numbers of people who heard His fame followed Jesus from many regions. In Matthew chapter 4, Jesus overcame the temptations with the word, shone the light of Christ into the darkness, called His disciples, and began His public ministry with teaching, the proclamation of the gospel, and healing.

And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.”
Jesus had received baptism from John and had the sin of the world passed on to Him, and He was to die on the Cross and rise from the dead to save us. It was when, to accomplish that work, He had first had our sins passed on to Him through the baptism, gone into the wilderness to be tempted, and fasted forty days, night and day.

I thank the many people who took part in the work and truly labored. The church is now doing the work of translating the praise songs we have written into the languages of many nations; the work of recording the word as sound so that even those who cannot read books or whose eyes are dim can hear the news of the gospel; and the work of making it known so that the whole world can encounter the gospel anywhere. In this way we must make the gospel of the water and the Spirit cover the whole world.

The Lord’s public ministry, that is, the work of saving mankind from sin, began in earnest.
