Jesus saved us, who were lost, from sin, and now He has called us to live together with Him, following His will. Just as we abandoned our own righteousness and believed in the Lord’s grace when we received salvation, so even after we have been saved, we must regard the Lord’s word as right rather than our own thoughts, and follow it. Luke chapters 9–15 show Jesus going toward Jerusalem and the people He met on that way. The Lord teaches them and makes clear by what people receive the remission of sins and on whom they must rely as they live. To know the heart of the One who has saved us and to follow Him—this is the faith that we who read this word must learn.

In their departure there were the calling of Jesus and the work He had entrusted to them. Only when they knew whose command they had received and what they were going to preach would it also become clear what the disciples were to rely on and what they had to keep on that road.

Ch09_02_Sermon_Is the desire to see Jesus faith？ (Luke 9:7–9)

The things Jesus did and the news the disciples preached reached even Herod the tetrarch. The king, who came to know what was happening among the people, could not remain calm. “Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by Him; and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead” (Luke 9:7). People said many things about Jesus, who was doing marvelous things, and among them was also the word that John, whom Herod had killed, had risen. To Herod, who was sitting on the king’s seat, this news was not a story he could easily overlook.

Ch09_03_Sermon_The bread handed from the hands of the Lord into the hands of the disciples (Luke 9:10–17)

The apostles returned from preaching and told Jesus what they had done. The Lord took them and went aside privately to a town called Bethsaida, but the multitude knew it and followed. The Lord did not regard them as a nuisance and turn them away. “But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing” (Luke 9:11). The work of teaching the kingdom of God and the work of healing the sick were carried out together. The Lord, who knew the circumstances of the multitude, gave them the word they needed and also cared for the suffering of their bodies.

Ch09_04_Sermon_Live not by human means and methods but by the blessing of the Lord (Luke 9:1–17)

These days there are so many things going on that it seems an age of chaos has come. In the work of preaching the gospel, too, there have been various things that blocked the way, and it seems that through such things the Lord first prepares the hearts of the servants of God. Even when we go through difficulties, we must seek the guidance of the Lord and preach the gospel. In any case, as all things work together for good, I believe that He has made things turn out well. But one thing is clear: whatever danger there may be in that country, we must go. We must not only go and preach the gospel to them, but also raise up workers, and we must make it possible to keep preaching the gospel to those brothers and sisters until the day the Lord comes, without cutting off our concern for them. I have the thought that we must translate the sermons very simply into the language of that country, and also into the languages of the many peoples living in it, and preach the gospel to them. Whatever happens, we go. This is because the Lord has started the work there. But since there are many things that human strength can do nothing about, I feel that God must bless us.

Ch09_05_Sermon_The person who has received the remission of sins must live united with the Lord and with the church (Luke 9:23)

Examining ourselves before God in the light of the word, I would like us to think together through the word about how we should go forward serving the Lord. After we have received the remission of sins, the joy of having received the remission of sins is truly great. But the Psalms say, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1); yet because people do not do this part of uniting well, their faith does not become a complete faith but becomes a faith of their own alone, and because it does not become a uniting faith, it brings a setback to their life of faith. People make very many mistakes in this part. The remission of sins can be received by grace, but uniting cannot be done unless one denies oneself. And serving the Lord, too, cannot be carried on unless one denies oneself. We must give thought to these matters, and we must think through the word about how we should go forward while uniting.

Ch09_06_Sermon_The Lord saved me， lacking as I am (Luke 10:17–24)

In Luke chapter 10, our Lord chose seventy others besides the twelve disciples and had them go about to every place and spread the gospel. When they had preached the gospel and come back, they rejoiced, reporting to the Lord, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name” (Luke 10:17). The seventy had been held especially precious by Jesus, had gone on a preaching journey with the life of disciples and come back, and so they testified in this way of what they had experienced. As they rejoiced so greatly, our Lord said, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:18–20). He was telling them not to rejoice in that very thing, that demons submitted in the Lord’s name, but to rejoice that their names were written in heaven.

When Jesus was alone praying, He asked the disciples who were with Him who people said He was. In what the crowds said, the names of John the Baptist, Elijah, and the old prophets came up. Then the Lord asked how the disciples themselves believed. “He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter answered and said, ‘The Christ of God’” (Luke 9:20). Peter did not call Jesus merely one of the outstanding prophets. He confessed Him as the Christ whom God had sent, and after that confession, the Lord taught the work He would accomplish.

After speaking of His suffering, death, and resurrection, about eight days later Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain. The purpose of His going up on the mountain was to pray. The disciples followed the Lord, with whom they had always been, but there they came to see a glory different from the appearance they usually saw. “As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening” (Luke 9:29). It was not the appearance of the Teacher they had always seen. It was not a glory that arose because the disciples made something for Him, but a glory that appeared on the Lord.

That father, who was among the multitude, cried out to Jesus and implored Him. “Suddenly a man from the multitude cried out, saying, ‘Teacher, I implore You, look on my son, for he is my only child’” (Luke 9:38). He did not merely wait for the Lord to recognize him among many people, but asked the Lord to look on his only son.

When Jesus “rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the child, and gave him back to his father” (Luke 9:42), the people marveled at the majesty of God. Because the Lord did what the disciples had not been able to do, the hearts of the people who saw it were greatly moved. But the word Jesus spoke to His disciples at that time was not only the story of victory that people might have expected. “While everyone marveled at all the things which Jesus did, He said to His disciples” (Luke 9:43). At the very moment when people were marveling at His power, the Lord spoke of His being delivered into the hands of men in the days to come.

Ch09_11_Sermon_The little child He set before the disciples who disputed over who was greatest (Luke 9:46–48)

Jesus taught His disciples, “The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men” (Luke 9:44). But in the text that follows appear disciples who are concerned with a completely different matter. “A dispute arose among them as to which of them would be greatest” (Luke 9:46). While the Lord was speaking of the way on which He would humble Himself for sinners, a dispute arose among the disciples as to who was the greater person. Just because they were following the same Lord, it did not mean that even their hearts in looking at one another had already been made right.

After Jesus had said, “Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me” (Luke 9:48), John reported one matter. It was that they had seen a man casting out demons in the name of Jesus, though he did not go about with the disciples. “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name” (Luke 9:49). There was the name of the Lord in what that man did, but what weighed first on the hearts of the disciples was the fact that he was not with them.

That Jesus set His course toward Jerusalem was not simply a matter of visiting another town. Luke records that journey in connection with the appointed time for the Lord to be received up. “Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem” (Luke 9:51). The Lord did not move without knowing what He was going to undergo. He had already told His disciples of His suffering, death, and resurrection, and now He firmly resolved to go toward Jerusalem, where He would accomplish that work of salvation.

When Jesus was going along the road, someone came forward and said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go” (Luke 9:57). Judging from those words alone, it seems that he was fully prepared to follow the Lord. But Jesus did not immediately promise a comfortable future in reply to the words that he would follow Him. “And Jesus said to him, ‘Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head’” (Luke 9:58). The Lord let him know what kind of way the way of following Him was. The person who would follow Him anywhere had first to examine whether what he expected and the way the Lord was going were the same.

Ch10_01_Sermon_Preach the gospel according to the will with which He sent out the seventy (Luke 10:1–16)

When we try to preach the gospel, the first thing that comes to our minds is what and how much we must have ready. If we think that we must have eloquence enough to move people’s hearts and comfortable circumstances, it becomes hard to take the first step while we look at our insufficient selves. But Jesus appointed the seventy and sent them ahead to the places where He Himself was about to go. They began the Lord’s work not because they had finished all the preparations by themselves, but because the Lord gave them the word to preach and the places to go. When we look into this sending, we can know what we, who are insufficient, must rely on to preach the gospel.

Ch10_08_Sermon_The Lord was pleased when people heard the word of God (Luke 10:38–42)

This word, just as we have read it, is a word saying that the Lord was pleased when people heard the word of God. The word says, “Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house” (Luke 10:38). Martha is Mary’s older sister. Jesus had entered that house and was being served, whether with food or with tea, and the younger sister Mary was sitting at the Lord’s feet, listening to the word the Lord was speaking. At that time the older sister Martha was diligently preparing food in the kitchen to serve the guest. Since a guest had come, in human terms it was right to prepare food, and although it was also good for her sister to hear the word, it seemed right to her to prepare the food together and serve rather than to do it by herself, and so Martha probably said what she said. So she asked the Lord to command her sister to help her, since she was the one making the food. Then the Lord said, “One thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:42). It means that, having been invited into that house and having entered it, He regarded hearing the word of God as better than preparing a lot of food and serving. It is just as we know well.

Prayer, too, begins with knowing our lack. But since knowing our lack does not automatically make us pray, the Lord showed us the figure of a man who actually goes and asks.

Today we have read the word of Luke chapter 11. The Lord spoke about the prayer He taught us. God wanted to teach us to pray. And through this, He is telling us, “This is how prayer is done, by faith.” And He explains this part by giving an example. “Which of you, when a friend comes to you at midnight and says, ‘I have nothing to eat, so just lend me three loaves of bread,’ would say, ‘Look here, my man, what time is it now? And my children and my wife have all gone to bed, so it is late this evening and I cannot give you any. Come tomorrow morning or do something like that.’ Would you do that?” That is right. Given the circumstances, it is bothersome and one is in no position to give, but when a close friend comes and asks for help, how many friends would refuse it? No matter how late at night it is, if a friend comes and keeps knocking on the door and asking, saying that he has nothing to eat and asking to be lent some, would one not have no choice but to lend it, if only because of his earnest pleading? To the one who asks while pleading, one cannot but lend. How much more, then, when a child of God asks God, his own Father, would God not give? That is what it means.

Also, some tested Jesus and “sought from Him a sign from heaven” (Luke 11:16); that is, they were telling Him to try just once to make a miracle happen in heaven right before their eyes, and asking whether He could do that. Jesus cast out the demon that kept the man from speaking so that the man came to speak, yet the people slandered Jesus instead.

Jesus did not hide the will of salvation in a place where people could not see it and then tell them to find it out. Before such people, the Lord spoke of the reason one lights a lamp: “No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light” (Luke 11:33). He thought it strange that Jesus did not wash His hands. The reason the text records this scene does not lie in teaching hygiene before meals. It is to reveal, through the word of the Lord, how the man who was judging another by visible actions regarded the state of his own heart.

The thought that we have kept something without omission gives us reassurance. The moment we regard ourselves as having done all the prescribed things, we may no longer ask why we must do them. For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone” (Luke 11:42). There was the labor of counting out and offering even small herbs, but they abandoned justice and the love of God. The Lord’s rebuke did not mean that they should put less devotion into it. He was correcting the error of ignoring the very will of God while performing the act of offering to God.

He understood that the words of the Lord applied to them as well, but rather than asking what they had to correct, he protested that they had been insulted. A man who claimed to know the word well was defending himself before the Lord, who was preaching that word. If one worries about one’s position being damaged before weighing what is right and what is wrong, it is difficult to accept the opportunity to set one’s wrongs right even when it comes. This lawyer’s response shows that having learned much and having a heart that obeys the word are not necessarily the same.

Having heard many of the words of Jesus does not mean having accepted those words. The scribes and the Pharisees who appear at the end of Luke chapter 11 did not try to correct their wrongs even after hearing the rebuke of the Lord. “And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things” (Luke 11:53). When the Lord came out of that house, their questioning grew even fiercer. The record that they cross-examined Him about many things does not mean that they were learning diligently. Instead of acknowledging the wrongs that the Lord had exposed earlier, they went in the direction of assailing the Lord and questioning Him pointedly. While there are people who hear the same word and correct their own thinking, there are also people who try to defend their own thinking by attacking the One who spoke.

First, let us look from chapter 11 verse 43. “Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over them are not aware of them” (Luke 11:43–44). When a lawyer said that by saying these things He was insulting them too, the Lord declared woe to the lawyers as well. He said that they loaded people with burdens hard to bear while they themselves did not touch them with one finger, and that they built the tombs of the prophets while approving of the deeds of their fathers who had killed those prophets. And He said, “The blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation” (Luke 11:50), and He said, “Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered” (Luke 11:52). When the Lord came out from there, the scribes and the Pharisees assailed Him vehemently and cross-examined Him about many things, and they lay in wait for Him, seeking to catch something out of His mouth.

At the center of waiting is not the time one has calculated but the master who will return. Because the servant wants to see his master and wants to welcome him, his heart is not stolen away by other things even while the master has not yet come.

Because Jesus knew that His disciples would go through such things, He clearly stated the purpose for which He had come. “I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!” (Luke 12:49). The coming of the Lord was not something that satisfied everyone as people wished and kept their existing lives just as they were. The fire that the Lord sent on the earth is the very work of saving sinners. Because this salvation—in which He came clothed in a human body, had sin passed on to Him through the baptism He received from John, died on the Cross, and rose again—has been sent on the earth, it has become impossible to let things go by as if nothing had happened, leaving sin and unbelief just as they are.

Jesus spoke to the multitudes by citing exactly this familiar kind of judgment. “Then He also said to the multitudes, ‘Whenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, “A shower is coming”; and so it is. And when you see the south wind blow, you say, “There will be hot weather”; and there is’” (Luke 12:54–55). Although they knew the coming weather by looking at the clouds and the wind, they did not make the proper judgment before Jesus, who had come to them.

What does the word that the Lord came to send fire mean? The Bible explains this part in verses 51 through 53. “Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, but rather division” (Luke 12:51). It means being divided, fighting. That He came to send fire means that He came to judge those who oppose God; that is, it means that He came to bring division, to bring about fighting.

When the news that certain Galileans had been killed by Pilate was brought to Jesus, the Lord asked a question directed at the hearts of the people who had brought that news. “And Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things?’” (Luke 13:2). He was asking whether one can judge, from the fact that the harm was great, that that person’s sins were more than those of other people.

The Lord saw her and called her, and He loosed the bondage that had afflicted her. “But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, ‘Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.’ And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God” (Luke 13:12–13). The person who, in long-standing suffering, could not straighten her body by herself was immediately made straight by the word and the touch of the Lord.

There is something we must first consider in following the Lord. It is whether we can really follow the Lord with the resources we have. If we judge that we have the strength and the ability to follow the Lord as much as we want, then we can simply follow Him in that way. Now, a person who builds a tower must first calculate whether what he has will be enough for him to complete the tower and hold its completion ceremony. Even with building a single house, though one has planned it, one must calculate whether one’s property is plentiful enough to build the house; if one has done the design and obtained the permit, but has resources only enough to lay the foundation, will one not end up stopping in the middle of building the house, so that things go wrong? Would it not be shameful in front of people? It means that one must calculate that first and then do it. Likewise, when a king goes to make war against another king, should he not also consider whether he can fight against that other nation and win, and go out if he can win, and if he cannot win, go early and ask for peace?

When many people share a life of faith with us, it is easy for us, too, to think that we are following well among them. Since we hear the same word and sit in the same place, we assume that the direction of our hearts will also be the same. But whether we still try to follow Him even when the word of the Lord collides with what we want to keep is another matter. Jesus turned and spoke to the great multitude that was going with Him. This is because whom they were following mattered more than the fact that many people had gathered.

If we sum up in a word what the Lord is saying to us through this word, it is a word about revering God. To revere God means to respect, love, and fear Him. We can love and respect God, but we must also know how to fear Him. It is because we fear God that we can worship before God, humble ourselves, follow God, and obey and submit. Without a heart that fears, that does not happen. We must know how to fear the One whom we ought to fear. The Lord once said, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28).

Ch15_01_Sermon_Do not block the place where sinners draw near (Luke 15:1–2)

There are times when, even though we want to hear the word, our past wrongs come to mind and we cannot draw near. Because it seems that the Lord will accept us only if we first show a changed appearance, we hide the sin in our hearts and stay on the outskirts. But in today’s passage, at the very place where sinners come to Jesus, it is revealed how different human judgment and the heart of the Lord are. Here lies the reason we must first look at the Lord, who welcomes them, rather than at the qualifications of the people who drew near.

When many people are gathered, it is easy to forget the one person who cannot be seen. Because there is also much work in caring for those who are already together, the fact that one person is missing is sometimes regarded as no big deal. But Jesus, while speaking of the reason He receives sinners, showed a man who sets out to find the one lost out of a hundred sheep. When we know how the Lord regards that one, we, too, can no longer measure joy merely by whether people are many or few.

Ch15_03_Sermon_Why did the woman light a lamp and sweep the house for one drachma？ (Luke 15:8–10)

There are times when we give up searching for something we have lost. When the thought that we can get by without it grows larger than the effort of searching further, even the regret we felt at first gradually becomes smaller. But the woman of whom the Lord spoke lost one drachma, and she lit a lamp, swept the house, and searched diligently. When we think about what made her search so hard, the heart of God, who deals with the salvation of one sinner, also comes into view anew. With our eyes, which used to evaluate people according to their usefulness, we cannot fully fathom the meaning of that effort.

Ch15_04_Sermon_God＇s one lost soul (Luke 15:1–10)

Luke chapter 15 tells the story of seeking the lost sheep and finding the lost drachma. Two things are spoken of here. It speaks of how difficult and hard it is on God’s side, when one sheep out of a hundred has lost its way, to go out and find that lost sheep, and how great the delight and joy are when it is found. I cannot tell you how hard it is for God, too, to find the lost sheep. It means that even though He is One with great power, it is that hard for Him. But it says that when one lost sheep is found, the joy is so great that all the people of the neighborhood are gathered together and a feast is held.

Ch15_05_Sermon_He was lost and is found (Luke 15:11–24)

Luke chapter 15 speaks of three parables about finding what was lost. The last story among them is the story of the younger son who returned, and this word presents the parable of the two sons. Through this word, I wish for us to share grace together. It says that a certain man had two sons, and the younger son asked his father for the portion that would fall to him, obtained all of that portion, went out, and wasted all the property with prodigal living. “And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood. And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living” (Luke 15:12–13).

Ch15_06_Sermon_Only when one＇s own goodness is broken is the goodness of God revealed (Luke 15:25–32)

This part of Luke chapter 15 tells us truly many things, and among them it tells us that only when a born-again person’s own rightness—that is, the part where he says that he himself is right before God—is broken can the Lord use him. We cannot say that our rightness is more right than the righteousness of God, than the rightness of God, just because we do the work of God well or because we preach the gospel of God. No matter how much a person lives for the gospel, and no matter how excellent a man of God he is, he cannot say that he is better than that love and that righteousness of God, who saved us through Jesus Christ. It is that righteousness by which Jesus received baptism from John in the Jordan River, had all the sin of the world transferred to Him, and died for us in our place, and so caused us to be born again. But many people, while believing in God, live with a heart like that of the first son and act in such ways. That is why many people make the heart of God feel hurt and commit many wrongs before God.

Ch15_07_Sermon_The father， who embraced the son who returned and went out to the son who stood outside (Luke 15:11–32)

Even when a feast is held in one house, not everyone rejoices together. Someone is welcomed for the reason that he has returned, but a person who thinks he has kept the house for a long time may feel that the welcome is unfair. In today’s text the father embraced the son who returned, and he also went out and pleaded with the son who would not come in to the feast. Only when we look at these two scenes together can we know what made the father glad and what made the son distant from that joy.
