The Gospel of Mark Biblical Exposition series you are now listening to consists of sixteen chapters and is divided into four volumes. This second volume covers chapters five through eight. The content is organized by topic and divided into three sections: Biblical Exposition, Question-and-Answer, and Sermon.

The Biblical Exposition & Sermon Series of God’s servant Pastor Paul C. Jong, Mark Seen from the Perspective of the Gospel of the Water and the Spirit (II), reveals through Mark chapters 5–8 who Jesus is before sin, Satan, and death.

The miracles in which Jesus ruled over evil spirits, disease, and death and fed the hungry multitudes are not a promise that worldly wishes will be granted, but signs showing that He is the Son of God, the Lord of life.
This book uncovers the sin that comes out of the heart, the traditions of men, and the limits of our own thinking. Jesus bore all the sins of the world through the baptism He received from John the Baptist, was judged on the Cross, and rose again to complete salvation. Whoever believes this gospel receives the remission of all his sins at once, receives the Holy Spirit, is reconciled with God, and lives spreading to other souls the Word of life he has received.

● Scripture quotations used in this book are from the ‘New King James Version (NKJV)’, ‘American Standard Version (ASV)’.

● This audiobook is an original human creation based on the sermons of Rev. Paul C. Jong. To provide clear delivery and a comfortable listening experience, AI technology was employed only for the voice generation.

The bondage of evil spirits that no one can control, long illness, the news of death, and the sin that ceaselessly comes out from within the heart are not solved by human will and effort alone. But the One who accomplishes what man cannot do is Jesus Christ. This book plainly proclaims Jesus Christ, who comes to the place of despair, saves us from sin and sets us free from the power of Satan, and gives us life and true peace.

Mark chapter 5 records the events in which Jesus set free a man who was held by an unclean spirit, healed a woman who had suffered from a flow of blood for twelve years, and raised the dead daughter of Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue. The man who lived among the tombs was in so wretched a state that no one could control him even with chains, but when Jesus cast out the demons named Legion, he was restored to his right mind. Jesus told him to tell his family of the grace he had received, and he made known widely in the region of Decapolis what Jesus had done for him. Then, when Jairus the ruler of the synagogue pleaded with Him to save his dying daughter, Jesus set out for his house. On the way, a woman who had suffered from a flow of blood for twelve years touched the garment of Jesus and was healed of her disease. Jesus sought out the woman, declared that her faith had saved her, and told her to go in peace. The news came that Jairus’s daughter had died, but Jesus said, “Do not be afraid; only believe,” and then took the child by the hand and raised her up. This chapter shows the power of Jesus, who has authority even over demons, disease, and death, and His love that has compassion on a person whom no one could restore.

Mark chapter 6 begins with the event in which Jesus was rejected in His hometown, and records His sending out of the twelve disciples two by two, the death of John the Baptist, the miracle of feeding the five thousand, His walking on the sea, and His healing of the sick at Gennesaret. The people of Jesus’ hometown were astonished at His wisdom and mighty works, but they looked only at His familiar human background and did not receive Him. Jesus gave the twelve disciples power over unclean spirits and sent them out to preach, and the disciples preached repentance, cast out demons, and healed the sick. Meanwhile Herod, hearing the news about Jesus, was afraid, thinking that John the Baptist, whom he had killed, had risen. John the Baptist had been put in prison for pointing out Herod’s wrongful marriage, and he was beheaded as Herodias’s daughter demanded. When the disciples returned from their ministry, Jesus intended to let them rest, but He had compassion on the great multitude, who were like sheep without a shepherd, taught them the word, and fed the five thousand with five loaves and two fish. Afterward Jesus came to His disciples walking on the sea and made the wind cease. After He arrived at Gennesaret, all the sick who touched the hem of His garment were healed. This chapter shows the compassion and the power of Jesus, who teaches, feeds, and heals even while being rejected by those who do not believe.

These days the gospel of the water and the Spirit is being preached widely abroad, for which I am thankful, but when I look at this country, my heart aches a great deal. What I hope and desire is that people would all believe the gospel of the water and the Spirit, receive the remission of sins, and live with the Holy Spirit dwelling in their hearts, so that whenever the Lord comes, they can greet Him. Therefore, when we listen to the word, we should listen with the alertness of asking, what would become of me if I went before the Lord tomorrow? Only then can we go before the Lord at any time when He comes.

Mark chapter 7 records how Jesus criticized the tradition of the elders held by the Pharisees and the scribes, taught that what defiles a man is not unwashed hands or food from outside but the sin that comes out of the heart, and then cast the demon out of the Syro-Phoenician woman’s daughter and healed a man who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech. The Pharisees and the scribes blamed the disciples for eating food without the ceremonial washing of hands, but Jesus rebuked them for keeping the tradition of men while laying aside the commandment of God. In particular, He pointed out the contradiction of using the tradition of “Corban”—declaring something a gift to God—to evade the responsibility of honoring one’s parents. Jesus said that the evil thoughts, fornication, theft, murder, covetousness, and the like that come out of a man’s heart defile him. Afterward, in the Gentile region of Tyre, when the Syro-Phoenician woman pleaded with Him to heal her demon-possessed daughter, Jesus received her humble and persistent answer and healed the daughter. In the region of Decapolis He said “Ephphatha” to a man who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, and opened his ears and tongue. This chapter shows that realizing the sin of the heart matters more than outward religious forms, and that the compassion and power of Jesus reach beyond the boundary of the Jews to Gentiles and neglected people.

Looking at the passage we have read today, the Pharisees all loved hypocrisy. They loved making only the outside clean. Every religion cleanses the shell. If people wash their hands and feet clean, wash their hair clean, and dress in clean clothes, they think they are clean. So the Pharisees, too, thought of themselves as clean people. But is a person clean because his outward appearance is clean? Being clean in outward appearance alone does not make one clean. The Pharisees in this passage professed to believe in God, yet they turned the word of God into the teachings of men and taught the people with them.

Mark chapter 8 begins with the event in which Jesus fed four thousand people with seven loaves and a few small fish, and records how He rebuked the Pharisees who demanded a sign and taught His disciples to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod. The disciples misunderstood Jesus’ words as being about a matter of food, and Jesus made them remember the events of feeding the five thousand and the four thousand and pointed out their unperceiving hearts. Then, after healing a blind man at Bethsaida in two stages, He asked His disciples on the way to Caesarea Philippi about His own identity. Peter confessed Jesus as the Christ, but when Jesus said that He would suffer, be killed, and rise again, Peter tried to stop Him. Jesus rebuked Peter for not being mindful of the things of God but of the things of men. Finally, He taught that whoever would follow Jesus must deny himself and take up his own cross, and that even if one gains the whole world, it is of no profit if he loses his own life. This chapter shows that we must go beyond confessing with the mouth who Jesus is, and rightly understand and follow the Christ who works through suffering, the Cross, and the resurrection.
