The Gospel of Mark Biblical Exposition series you are now listening to consists of sixteen chapters and is divided into four volumes. This fourth volume covers chapters thirteen through sixteen. The content is organized by topic and divided into three sections: Biblical Exposition, Question-and-Answer, and Sermon.

The Gospel of Mark (III), Seen from the Perspective of the Gospel of the Water and the Spirit leads us to examine ourselves—we who claim to know Jesus, yet put our own thoughts and our own standards ahead of His Word.

The kingdom of heaven is not obtained by human goodness or effort; it is a kingdom received by believing, with the purity of a little child, in the work of salvation that Jesus completed through the baptism He received from John the Baptist, the Cross, and His resurrection.
This book makes clear that salvation is entirely the grace of God, and at the same time it tells us that those who have been saved must seek God's glory and the good of souls rather than their own desires and honor, and must live serving the least.
Furthermore, it leads us to turn away from a faith that puts forward only religious form and self-righteousness, like a fig tree with nothing but leaves, and to walk with the living God, believing His Word and bearing the fruit of love and gospel proclamation.

● Scripture quotations used in this book are from the ‘New King James Version (NKJV)’, ‘American Standard Version (ASV)’.

● This audiobook is an original human creation based on the sermons of Rev. Paul C. Jong. To provide clear delivery and a comfortable listening experience, AI technology was employed only for the voice generation.

Mark chapter 13 is the chapter in which Jesus foretold the destruction of the temple and taught His disciples concerning the signs of the last days, the tribulation, and His second coming. When one disciple marveled at the magnificence of the temple, Jesus said that not one stone would be left upon another and that all of it would be thrown down. When Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked when that would happen and what sign there would be, Jesus first warned them not to be deceived by false christs. Wars, earthquakes, and famines would arise, but by these alone one must not conclude that the end has already come, and He said that these things are the beginnings of sorrows. The disciples might stand before councils, synagogues, and those in power because of the gospel, and might even be rejected by their families, but the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. After the great tribulation and the deception of false christs, the Son of Man will come in the clouds with great power and glory and will gather those whom He has chosen. But since no one knows that day and hour, we must not calculate dates or be shaken by the rumors of the world, but must faithfully do the work entrusted to us and always stay awake.

Mark chapter 13 begins with the scene in which the disciples look at the magnificent temple building and marvel. But Jesus said that not one stone would be left upon another and that it would all fall down. No matter how firm a building and a religious institution may look, they cannot be eternal if they refuse the will of God. On the other hand, the salvation that Jesus Christ accomplished and His Word do not disappear even though heaven and earth pass away. Those who believe must build their faith upon the unchanging gospel rather than upon outward scale and glory.

Jesus, taking the temple of Jerusalem as a parable, spoke to us about the last days, when all the religions of this world will be united into one and each religion will lose its distinctive character. The disciples asked when such a thing would happen. At that time the temple of Jerusalem was destroyed, but in this present age it seems that all religions are collapsing. Let us look at verses 4 and 5. “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled?” And Jesus, answering them, began to say: “Take heed that no one deceives you” (Mark 13:4–5). Jesus said to take heed that we are not deceived by anyone, and by this He said that in the last days such deceptions become many. Of course, someone may say that if a man comes and claims that he is Jesus Christ, who among those who are born again would believe him; but the Lord is not saying this word now in order to test our faith. If the Lord said to beware of the deception of men, it means that when the last days come, such a world arrives.

Mark chapter 14 records the betrayal that arose as Jesus faced His death, the Last Supper, the prayer of Gethsemane, His arrest and trial, and Peter’s denial. The chief priests and the scribes sought a way to seize Jesus secretly and put Him to death, and Judas Iscariot promised them that he would deliver Jesus up. In contrast to this, a woman of Bethany poured very costly fragrant oil on Jesus’ head and showed the devotion of preparing beforehand for His burial. At the Passover meal Jesus spoke of the bread as His own body and of the cup as the blood of the covenant which is shed for many, and thus revealed that His death was a sacrifice for sinners. Jesus foretold that all His disciples would forsake Him and that Peter also would deny Him three times, but He promised that after He rose from the dead He would go before them to Galilee. In Gethsemane, even in the midst of extreme sorrow and agony, He obeyed the will of the Father rather than His own will. Jesus, who was arrested through the kiss of Judas Iscariot, clearly revealed at the trial of the religious leaders that He was the Christ and the Son of God, and He received the verdict that He was deserving of death, and insult as well. At the same time Peter denied Jesus three times, and when the rooster crowed a second time he remembered the word of Jesus and wept. This chapter clearly testifies that Jesus, knowing all of man’s betrayal and weakness, nevertheless walked the way of suffering and death of His own will in order to save sinners.

In the Bible there appears a woman who poured fragrant oil on Jesus. Whether she poured the fragrant oil on the head of Jesus or on His feet, the Lord counted this work precious, and Matthew, Mark, and John all recorded it. In Luke there appears a woman who had many sins, who poured fragrant oil on the feet of Jesus, wet those feet with her tears, and wiped them with her own hair. At that time the Pharisees said, “If you were really a prophet you would know who this woman is who is washing your feet.” This was because that woman was notorious in that town. But Jesus said, “When I came in you did not even give Me water to wash My feet, but this woman has washed My feet with her own tears and her hair,” and He said that the person who has received the complete remission of his sins will do as this woman did, but that the person who has not received the remission of his sins, the person who says that he has no sin, will not receive the Lord.

Mark chapter 15 records that Jesus was delivered to Pilate and tried, was mocked by the soldiers, and then was crucified and died at Golgotha, and was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. The religious leaders accused Jesus as though He were a rebel against Rome, and Pilate, although he could not confirm in Jesus any offense deserving of death, released Barabbas and delivered Jesus to the cross in order to gratify the crowd. The soldiers clothed Jesus with purple and put a crown of thorns on Him and mocked Him as the King of the Jews. At Golgotha they divided the clothes of Jesus by casting lots, and crucified Him together with two robbers. Those who passed by, the religious leaders, and even the men crucified with Him insulted Jesus. From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over the whole land, and Jesus cried out with a loud voice and then breathed His last. At that moment the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the centurion who watched this confessed that Jesus was truly the Son of God. Mary Magdalene and several other women watched this from afar, and Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus, wrapped it in fine linen, and laid it in a tomb hewn out of the rock. This chapter shows that the sinless Jesus bore the unjust verdict of men, their mockery, and the agony of the Cross, and by His death gave His own life as a ransom for many.

They had prepared spices, but they were anxious about who would roll away the great stone that blocked the tomb. Yet before they arrived, the stone had already been rolled away, and the tomb was empty. The young man clothed in white proclaimed, “He is risen! He is not here.” The resurrection is not a story that came out of the expectation or the imagination of the disciples, but an actual event that God accomplished.

Jesus, who was nailed to the cross and died and was buried in a tomb, rose from the dead, and He appeared to His disciples and commanded them to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. It then records that Jesus was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God, and that He worked together with the disciples when they preached the gospel.

Jesus, who was nailed to the cross and died and was buried in a tomb, rose from the dead, and He appeared to His disciples and commanded them to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
