Welcome to the Unsigned Unwind. This show is an attempt to gather great local music from all over the US and Canada, have a brief conversation with the band/musician and play one of their songs. My goal is that local-music enthusiasts, such as myself, can discover great local music that otherwise may have remained hidden to them. Ultimately, I would love to have local bands from different areas not only get to know each others music, but play shows together and really build a community.

This show is all about discovery. Not just yours, as a listener, but mine as well. The way the show operates is our showrunner, Angela Tourangeau schedules guests for me to talk to. I am not given any information about who I will be speaking with beforehand, just a name and a phone number. This way, as I find out where they are from, what their bands name is, what kind of music they play, influences, etc, you will be finding out right along with me.

Well, this was certainly an interesting episode. In talking with Doomsday Mechanics, we discovered that 20-something years ago I had played their old band, Frinds In Need Of on a certain little local-music show on the best independent radio station on the planet. I was a fan of that band and played the song a lot on the radio, and listened to the CD a lot in my car. It was pretty wild to realize that 21 years later, I was sitting with members of that band, interviewing them on my podcast.

There is little to say about Marty Wendell that hasn't already been said. The man is an absolute legend, having worked alongside such notable figures as Johnny Cash, Marty Stuart, Kris Kristofferson, Pete Seeger and many, many more. Having been familiar with Marty Wendell for more than half of my life, it is an understatement to say it was a real thrill to have him over to the Dazzle Den for a conversation that spanned his 60 years as a performing songwriter. Marty has a lot planned this year for his 60th anniversary, and you can hear all about it on this special episode of Unsigned518.

Unsigned518 - Episode 127 - Sons of Eden

Sons of Eden are a relatively new band that formed at Sienna college, but they have the sound, the determination and the songwriting chops to take the band far beyond their former campus halls. Influenced by the grunge sound of the early 90s, Sons of Eden's songs certainly flex that influence while adding their own flair to the mix. While they don't have anything released as of this episode, their first single is recorded and in the mixing phase, so it should be along shortly. They also went directly to a video shoot after leaving the Dazzle Den, so an accompanying video won't be far behind. I had never actually met Pearson before recording this episode, but he has been very instrumental in helping my band and so many others over these last several years as host of the hugely popular EQXsposure on WEQX that I felt like we were old pals. Every week Pearson puts together a playlist of local bands/musicians that really highlights the diverse and immense talent that can be found in our area. It is one of the few radio shows that I actively pay attention to each week, to see who is making moves in the 518. Pearson is more than just the host of EQXsposure, though. He makes really great music that, as I write this, I'm having trouble describing. It feels like a cross between ambient music and a score of a very tense movie. I know that description is not doing it justice, so you will just have to listen and decide for yourself.

Anacortez caught my attenition in a big way the first time I heard their cover of the classic deftones song My Own Summer (Shove It). I was blown away, not only by the ferocity of the guitars and the kick-you-in-the-face drums on the song, but by the nuance of the lyrics. Jessie's voice went from ultra-quiet whisper to raging scream with such a fluency that I would put her performance on par with nearly any national act. No lie. I had Jessie and Mike over to the Dazzle Den, where we talked about their history with music, and how the band came to formed. We also play a few Anacortez songs, including the cover of deftones. Joe Adee is a unique and offbeat guy. It was apparent immediately upon meeting him that he marched to his own drum. He has assembled a band that brilliantly complements his style. He is known to not only not rehearse, but will sometimes play the same song at consequetive gigs, but play it in a different key every time. Also, he doesn't tell his bandmates about this ahead of time. But, they adapt and thrive, propelled by their unmatched cohesion. Carolyn Shapiro stopped by the Dazzle Den recently and we had a great discussion about her music and her latest album. We had been aware of each other for a while, but had never actually met, so the conversation you are hearing on this episode is the first time we'd ever spoken in person. While I do enjoy having friends, or people I have met on the show, I truly enjoy meeting someone that I respect just moments before we record.

We talk about how Carolyn got into the banjo, how she shares a similar "origin story" with Reese Fulmer, and she even plays two songs live in-studio. We made it through January. Barely. The days are now getting longer as we head towards spring, which means more live music. Not that there is a shortage in the winter months, but more people do tend to attend live music events in the warmer weather, so that is always a plus for local bands.

On this episode, I mention one event happening each day from now through the weekend. I also play a song from a couple of 518 bands or musicians that are playing this weekend.
