The spies promised to do so, and they returned safely and reported all these things to Joshua.

Ordinarily it is shallow enough for people to wade across, but in the rainy season, when wheat and barley are harvested, the snow of Mount Hermon melts and the waters swell greatly and the current becomes fierce, so that anyone swept away is killed. The very name Jordan means a rushing rapid, a place of swift current. God told Joshua to cross the Jordan River after three days and enter the land of Canaan.

It was the rainy season, and the river was greatly swollen, so that in human eyes the crossing itself was a venture that risked their lives. But God commanded the priests to bear the Ark of the Covenant and set their feet in that water first, and when they obeyed that Word, the river stopped and the people crossed as if treading on dry ground. This Word shows us how God leads His people into the promised land.

Only by bringing down this city could they take possession of the land, and God appointed His way of bringing down Jericho like this: seven priests were to take seven trumpets of rams’ horns and go before the Ark of the Covenant, and the people were to follow behind, circling the city once a day for six days, and on the seventh day seven times. When they had circled seven times and the priests blew the trumpets and the people shouted with a great shout, that solid wall came crashing down. This is the same formula of faith that obeys the Word as when, at the crossing of the Jordan, the waters stopped the moment the priests bearing the ark set their feet in the river.

No other reason or rationale can be found here; this Word itself is the truth.

This shows with what faith the Church of God is to live in this world in the age of the New Testament.
