Ch1-1_The Genealogy of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:1-6)

To become a part of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, we need to believe in His Salvation. In other words, believing in His salvation is the only way we become part of His genealogy.
Our Father God did not send angels to save us, he sent none other than His only son. It was Jesus Christ that our Father God sent to save us from our sins. He made a covenant that anyone who believes in Jesus, who is the Son of God and our Savior, would be forgiven of all of his sins once and for all. In such a context, Matthew 1:1 says, “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham.” Here, “the genealogy of Jesus Christ” implies the spiritual world of how we can become God’s Children through the faith of knowing and believing in Jesus Christ, being delivered from the power of darkness.

Ch1-2_Let’s Give Thanks to Our Lord Jesus Who Came to Save Us (Matthew 1:18-25)

We greet Christmas. It seems like it is going to be a silent night and a holy night this year. The city has become quiet and still. It is hard to see Christmas lights or decorations on the street as we face an economic downturn. This must be a reflection of the bad economy these days. This reminds us of how we should keep our faith as we have another Christmas this year. Let’s look a New Testament passage from Matthew.
Verse 21 says, “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.” Our Lord was born into this world through a virgin and was called Jesus. The name “Jesus” means that it is the One who will save his people from their sins.

Ch1-3_Jesus Who Was Conceived by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:18-25)

Matthew chapter 1 describes the birth of Jesus in detail. By human logic, a virgin who has never been with a man having a child cannot be possible. A pregnancy could be possible only when there has been a sexual relationship between a man and a woman. Therefore, throughout the history of all ages, this kind of extraordinary birth is only seen as in a myth. However, this was possible with God.
We can understand this if we carefully examine the reason Jesus was born. The reason Jesus Christ, who is God in His essence, was born in a human form through the Virgin Mary was to save His people from all of their sins. In other words, to save sinners from their sins, He Himself had to come as the Savior. To save the sinners, a sinless One was needed as the propitiation for our sins (1 John 2:2), and that was Jesus Christ, who was God Himself.

Ch2_Where Can We Meet the Lord Properly? (Matthew 2:1-12)

There are many people living in this world. Among these people, many think of Jesus as their Lord only in theory. In America, Asia, and Europe, many people in the world want to receive salvation from their sins by believing in Jesus Christ. As it is in Matthew chapter 2, we should not become confused like the wise men who were traveling to meet the baby Jesus, guided by the stars, but fell into confusion when they stopped by at Jerusalem. Even today, there are people who try hard to meet Jesus to receive salvation, but never meet the Savior. The reason is that they want to meet Jesus according to their own fixed ideas.

Ch3-1_Spread the True Gospel and Jesus’ Righteous Deed (Matthew 3:1-17)

In the Bible, John the Baptist must have been an extremely important figure. John the Baptist cried out for repentance from the people of Israel. We must remember precisely the work of Jesus and John the Baptist. Jesus, who came to this world saved mankind, obeying the will of God along with John the Baptist. John the Baptist and Jesus came to this world and accomplished righteous deeds.
John the Baptist urged the people of Israel to return to God. We can see in Matthew 3:7 that John the Baptist boldly rebuked the Pharisees and Sadducees saying: “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?” when he saw them coming to him while he was baptizing. This John the Baptist rebuked the people of Israel severely as a prophet: “Repent, you brood of vipers!” John the Baptist was a prophet who did righteous deeds in God’s eyes and was the last prophet of the Old Testament era.

Ch3-2_Jesus Who Came to Blot Out Your Sins (Matthew 3:13-17)

Even as today’s Christians profess to believe in Jesus as their Savior, many of them do not know that Jesus is the Lord who has delivered us from all our sins through the gospel of the water and the Spirit. It is therefore necessary to prove to them, with this gospel of the water and the Spirit, that Jesus is indeed their Savior. As all are born as sinners, to be washed from all their sins, all must believe in the gospel of the water and the Spirit. In other words, to be born again, they must believe in the gospel of the water and the Spirit, and only when they believe so can they meet the Lord. Whether or not we can receive the remission of our sins and be born again depends on whether or not we know and believe in Jesus Christ correctly.

Ch4_Blessing Is Fearing God and Serving God (Matthew 4:1-11)

The righteousness of God that saves us from our sins is that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist and that He bled and died on the Cross to save us from our sins once and for all, and that God testified that He was the Savior. Today’s Scripture passage is about an event that happened right after the baptism of Jesus at the Jordan River.
After Jesus was baptized, He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And because He was hungry after having fasted for 40 days and 40 nights, the devil tried to tempt Jesus with three temptations.

Ch5_The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-16)

We read in Matthew chapter 5, verses 1-7 that Jesus spoke to His disciples and to us. Christians have called this teaching ‘the Sermon on the Mount’ since Jesus spoke these things on a mountain.
First, if we look at the Scripture from Matthew chapter 5 verse 3, Jesus said: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.” What the Lord means when he says “blessed are the poor” is that He granted Heaven only to those who are poor in spirit.

Ch6-1_The Lord’s Teaching on Prayer (1) (Matthew 6:1-15)

There is a child named Jin Woo Kim at our church. He was almost dying because of a rare disease. When he was first hospitalized, even the doctors did not know the cause, so they were at a loss how to cure him. We could only pray to God to heal the child. And now, the Lord led the child to meet a better doctor, so he is now in a much better condition. When hard times come our way, we must do all we are supposed to do, but we must first remember to pray.

Ch6-2_The Lord’s Teaching on Prayer (2) (Matthew 6:5-15)

I hope you all are people of prayer. I hope you become people of faith by praying and experiencing the answers from God. I hope you become people of strong faith and give many people help, just as Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk” (Acts 3:6). I also hope that you pray for what you need and receive it.
Humans are always insufficient, and therefore we must constantly pray. This is why Paul said, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks.” You must learn the prayer that you pray through faith in God. If you do not develop a habit of praying out loud when you pray together for a prayer topic, you cannot pray boldly when you need to pray for yourself later.

Ch6-3_Live with Your Hearts on the Lord (Matthew 6:21-23)

Today’s scripture lesson says, “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.” Our hearts are fickle as the rainy summer weather. The mind of a man is, also, like that. However, the Lord said, “The lamp of the body is the eye.” What the Lord means by this is that the whole body will be full of light if our eye is good, and that we must consider how we should put focus in our mind that comes and goes.
Since the eye is the lamp of the body, when the eye is good, the whole body is full of light, but when the eye is bad, the whole body is full of darkness. When our heart is gloomy, everything we see is dark. But, if we meditate the gospel of the water and the Spirit once again, our heart lightens up. When the Lord talks about the eye of a person, He makes mention of our heart of faith.

Ch6-4_Do Not Worry about Your Life, But Trust Only in God (Matthew 6:25-34)

We, the born-again are also prone to worry about the future even after having received the remission of sin. These are worries such as how I am going to live from now on, what I should do to eat, what I should do to wear, what I should do to make money, and how I should live. In this way, in our hearts, we have worrying hearts about the future. I see that those among the born again who are still young are apt to worry about the rest of their lives because they do not understand that God helps them and they have not experienced that God leads their way. Of course, it is only natural that we worry since we are human.

Ch6-5_Sufficient for the Day Is Its Own Trouble (Matthew 6:34)

The Lord said, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” The biggest enemy to the righteous who live a life of faith is worry. It is not even today’s worry, but worry for the future. To us, the righteous, the worries about the future are from our own shortcomings and weaknesses. Therefore, we may say, “This is who I am now, then, how can I not worry about tomorrow?”
It is only natural that we worry when we look at ourselves. However, if we see our shortcomings of today and look at ourselves, who do not seem to have the possibility of having any better futures, and predict our future, we cannot but worry about it. And this can make us give up our life of faith. This is because since we think that we know ourselves very well and that there is no guarantee that the future will be better, so when there is no hope, we come to fall on worries. And these worries wither away our faith thoroughly and make us fall on the fatal worries—“Should I give up my faith?”

Ch7-1_By Believing in the Power of the Gospel, We Must Enter by the Narrow Gate (Matthew 7:13-14)

In today’s scriptural passage, our Lord commanded us to “enter by the narrow gate.” What, then, is this narrow gate that He would tell us to enter by it? And what did He mean by the wide gate? All of us must now walk on the narrow and difficult way. To do so, we must believe in the gospel Word of the water and the Spirit even more ardently, and we must walk only by our faith in the Word of God. Sure, we could leave the narrow way and turn to the easier, wide way, but we must not do this, for the Lord has told us to walk on the narrow and difficult way.

Ch7-2_What Shall We Do If We Were Forsaken by the Lord on the Last Day? (Matthew 7:21-23)

Everyone born in this world is bound to fall in love at least once. This is how a man and a woman become one in marriage. But for most people, there is also a form of love that is called an unrequited love. There is one-sided love, in other words, that has little to do with how the other feels and what his intentions are. Few such loves actually bear complete fruits; in most cases, it ends as a one-sided love benefiting only one person. In such cases, it is generally forgotten in time, only remaining as a distant memory of heartache long ago, but there is also a stalker’s love that is far worse than unrequited love. These are people who are obsessed with the object of their love, no matter how they are often rejected time after time. In extreme cases, such an obsessive love leads one to kill the very person whom he loves.

Ch7-3_Faith That Can Do the Will of God the Father (Matthew 7:20-27)

Today, I wish to share with you the kind of faith that can do the will of God. In Matthew 7:21, Jesus Himself said, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.” Those who enter the Kingdom of Heaven by the will of the Lord are the very ones who have received the remission of their sins by believing in the gospel of the water and the Spirit. Saints are those who believe in the gospel of the water and the Spirit. The fruit that is born from believing in the gospel of the water and the Spirit is being remitted from all sins and becoming righteous. Therefore, only those who do the will of God the Father can enter Heaven. We must realize the reason why our Lord said, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”

In the above scriptural passage, our Lord said, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.” The Lord said here that not just anyone who claims to believe in Him can enter Heaven where He is, but only those who do the will of the Father can enter Heaven. On the last day of judgment, when many who had believed in Jesus protest to Him and say, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?” our Lord cannot but say to them, “You practiced lawlessness, and so I never knew you. Depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!”

In Matthew 7:15-20, Jesus said, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them.”

Ch8-1_The Healing of Spiritual Lepers (Matthew 8:1-4)

They say that a leper hardly feels any subjective symptoms of leprosy until three years have passed since the virus first infected him. But from the fourth year, some objective symptoms appear slowly. And it takes three more years that he can no longer hide his infection from others, as its symptoms are fully revealed. This is the nature of leprosy.
Today’s scriptural passage describes Jesus’ healing of a leper. The event described in this passage actually happened, and through it, God is revealing the nature of our sins, and He is also telling us the truth that He has completely solved this problem of our sins.

Whenever the believers of the gospel of the water and the Spirit gather together, everyday is a celebration for us. When we think about how God has blotted out our sins and ruminate on the gospel of the water and the Spirit once again, we are all laughing in joy.
As the centurion in today’s scripture passage confessed his strong faith in Jesus, saying, “But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed,” there are people of faith in the Bible who also believed only in the Word of God and followed the Lord. Blessed are those who have the true faith in the Word of God. And the faith of this centurion is the same faith of those in our age who believe in the gospel Word of the water and the Spirit.

Ch8-3_Follow the Lord First (Matthew 8:18-22)

It is written here, “Then a certain scribe came and said to Him, ‘Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.’” Jesus then said to the scribe, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” This man called as a scribe, in worldly terms, was a high-ranking public official. This man of a high position chose to follow Jesus, saying to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” This man had a great respect for Jesus, and he really wanted to follow him. He must have truly realized who Jesus was, and he must have thought that there was no one in this world who was greater than Jesus.
